Top 100 TV Markets

Why is it called FOX 5 in San Diego if KSWB is channel 69? Same with NBC 7?

Cable channel numbers. The market has VERY high cable penetration.

...and Hartford/New Haven! WCTX-TV/DT insists on calling themselves "MY-TV 9". The problem? WWOR-TV/DT (MY) analog channel 9 of Secaucus, NJ/New York City, the only true "MY 9", is only an hour away down I-95. WCTX-TV/DT is analog channel 59 and digital channel 39. I absolutely refuse to call them anything with "9".

Using the cable channel for identification is quite common, especially among stations with high-UHF assignments and in markets with high cable penetration and consistent placement, either from one dominant provider, or all of the major providers placing the station on the same channel. KASW 61 Phoenix has identified as channel 6 for some time now, first as WB 6/61, then as WB 6, and now as CW 6.

However, that is not the legal identification, as the legal ID must include the call letters and city of license.

At this time, digital stations use their analog channel for their PSIP ID, but I wonder if, once the transition phase is completed, that stations will eventually be able to identify themselves by their cable channel in their PSIP ID, provided of course that the channel number is not already being used by an over-the-air station.

And satellite penetration as KSWB is correctly listed as 69 and NBC as 39 on both Directv and Dish Network. Prior to the switch to Fox, KSWB identified themselves as "KSWB 5/69." NBC has always been "NBC 7/39" for the 10 years or so that I have lived here.
