Top 40 radio in DFW

I know it is odd for me to say this as an aging punk rocker but where the hell is top 40 radio?

Hillary Duff has the #1 album in the US but all I hear on KHKS is the same old tired focus group rappers. Who cares?

Hey Kiss, Other stations do R&B and rap better than you. Play to your strength. Lose the 50 cent crap, give us some good bubble gum pop.

All those "Top 40" stations go by different polls. If they want to play R&B, they will go by the polls where R&B is on top. Proof of this comes when Cassey Kassum (have no idea how to spell his name) counts down the "American Top Twenty" every Sunday night. That is totally different from the polls KISS follows. It's all what they choose.

PS but I am a little worried about that fact that you are begging for more Hillary Duff. :)

Casey Kasem

FYI, you can hear old airchecks of him on www.reelradio.com

Type Kasem in Search.

Several airchecks are available of his "American Top 40" show as well as his days in the early '60s on KRLA, Pasadena (Los Angeles).

I think radio disney can cure any Hilary jones, since she has one of the top shows on TV Disney.

DFW could use a less "urban" skewed top 40 station, I agree that the urban market is covered well by other than KISS FM.

I guess this is a case of "Majority Rules", and it looks like urban and spanish is the "Majority" in Dallas/Ft. Worth.

You can also hear him on the Cartoon Network when he voiced several Hanna-Barbara cartoons: "Shaggy"-Scooby Doo. "Robin" -"Batman","Superfriends", New versions of "Space Ghost"( 1980's) as Jace.

Majority Rule can also signify that the audience doesnt really know squat either or have any real taste in music, just my 2 cents :D

Absolutely! The "majority" could be a small group out of many who bothered to respond. The overall product is bad, that is why radio is losing listners to the satellite, cds internet and Ipods. Advertiser /researchers are missing the mark.

If you and MR. "Bang" are so unhappy, instead of insults, go and buy you a radio station, put your "tasteful" music on it, get advertisers and reseachers that are not "missing the mark", and see how successful you can be, since nobody else "know squat"... Stop your crying and do something about it! As that saying goes, "Love it or leave it". When I get tired of what I am hearing on the radio, I just pop in a CD. That's what is great about this country. You are free to do that.

KRBE in Houston is the best FM CHR station in Texas.

If you want Hillary Duff, listen to Radio Disney 620, they play her all the time.
Hate the music or not, I think Radio Disney carries on the true spirit of classic Top 40 radio better than any Clear Channel station. Mostly upbeat music geared to kids and teenagers, with a frantic non-stop pace. And they play little rap crap.

Jamz is just feeling slighted because his "market share" is being insulted. Frankly, he should be glad that theres still desparate people out there who want to listen to the Kay-One-Oh Fizzoh's, BEATs and CASAs in this market, which by the way are by no means "Top 40", they're urban. Myself, I saw the light about two years ago and got on the sirius train. I'll only listen to local if its news or weather (820/1080) related.

Re: Depends on the local market.

All stations use trade magazines and so-called "tip sheets" that show what other stations are programming. In additon, most use online services like BDS and Mediabase to see how songs are played on other stations.

But there are no "polls" that stations use exclusively to program. All the national and regional data that is published or shared within a group of stations do not form the main decision making criteria for contemporary stations. Local research does. Stations do a variety of things to get listeners to give scores to the individual songs.

So, a station uses input from their own listeners to determine how to continue to play songs, and they use programming sense and indicators from other markets to decide initially on playing songs to begin with.

Obviously, if a station finds its listeners wanting a hip hop mix, they will look at similar other staitons across the country to see what they are doing. If they lean pop, they will look at the few pop leaning CHRs. But, ultimately, all the decisions are based on local factors and the "votes" of local listeners.

The national chart shows have to look at a national consensus. They are kind of middle of the pack, leaning neither too po nor too alternative nor too rhythmic. The same show plays in Fargo, with no ethnic influence, and in LA, where over 70% of the 12-34 population is ethnic.

> It's all what they choose.

Actually, it is what the local listeners choose.

No Jamz just know when you are trying to be insulting in an innocent way, and when I try to defend what you are insulting, you try to make me look like an angry savage that jumping all over your case. Like I've said before, as long as you post comments like that, and you are certainly free to do that, expect me to respond. I think it's insulting when you say that people who listen to those stations, which happen to play the same type of music are desperate. So what are the people who listen to 93.3, 92.5, 102.9, 99.5, 103.7, 98.7, and 96.3?

DUDE. You are just saying that, because I don't agree with the negative comments that are constantly posted on this board about urban oriented stations. All I read is "Crap" when refering to these stations. Well, I don't agree with that, and I WILL speak my mind as long as everyone else is. I have that right just like everyone else. It seems like I'm the "Minority" on this board, but I like a challenge sometimes. :)

Poor people tend to listen in clusters

I guess the lower end of the food chain can't afford the escape to satellite radio, iPods, or internet stations.

IF the above statement is true, then who the hell are the advertisers selling to if the remainder left don't have the money to escape?

They are the same type/class of people in my book man. These are folks who are either too cheap to get on the XM/Sirius train or buy an MP3/IPOD player, then gripe about how one "free radio" station sounds like all the others. IMHO, if you dont make the attempt to look for an alternative, you dont even have a right to argure.

On another note, I do apologize about my previous comment. While it wasnt the best to say dude, it just bothers me how people use the whole "majority rule" excuse to put out or defend a bad product.
