If they can control what's on their Ipod, or seek a station on the internet to please themselves, they will. Satellite is the "new toy" but it is a well crafted toy using the basics that used to be "radio". Satellite is actually using well seasoned talent, not a fresh out of school approach, with music that still holds up. They are not beholden onto the advertiser, who's marketing skills dismiss programming ideas . It's become program around the sales not sell around the programming. The "lower end of the food chain" have ipods btw:)

Slam, on a serious note, like it or not, that is just the way of the world.

Actually I think local radio is better when majority doesn't rule and a target market is catered to. I understand that their is a large urban and hispanic market in DFW, what I hope we both agree on is that the urban and hispanic market can be segmented further, and that there is probably some european/american audience that will join into those segments.

Personally I really like Missy Elliot, Destiny's Child, Usher, Alicia Keyes (sp?), and other "Urban" SINGERS. I really can't stand 50 cent, eminem, or even Tupac rap. The thing for me is the song, not the Artist's heritage.

There is room for all of us.

I still have a few old AT40 shows on LPs from the 70s....and of course I have the infamous "Dead Dog" dedication in MP3 that he denied for MANY years....Everytime I play that for friends, they cannot believe its mr Squeaky Clean..

(but then look at his daughter!!! FORGET Hillary...well at least until she gets past 19-20 ;)

Top 40 comes down to THIS

KRBE IS one of the best CHR's in the country. They have remained live and local throughout their development as a nationally known radio station.
Most of all, they perform well to their target audience. They don't need to be #1 in the 12+ ratings to be successful. The real ratings prove this.

I like to use KRBE as an example of what all top 40 stations should do.
They have adjusted their playlist to an urban/rhythmic bias, yet they are still a top 40 station.

My problem with KIIS in LA is that I can get most of that music listening to a rap station. There's no unique identity or reason to have a top 40 station that is 95% rap because 1) rap does not constitute that portion of record sales. Rap's cume record sales have dropped in the last few months.
2) Why call it a top 40 or hit music station? Call it what it freaking is--today's best rap and R&B hits.

Papa Roach, Hilary Duff, Ashlee Simpson, Jessica Simpson, The Killers, Green Day, Fallout Boy, Lifehouse, 3 Doors Down.
All hugely successful records, but nowhere to be heard on LA's number 1 hit music station.

KRBE plays all of these bands without alienating the hip-hop audience. They take risks.
Top 40 should take risks and above all, it should play the top 40 records. Not just a segment of them.

For those who hate rap and its existence, prepare for the bad news you already knew.
It's a hot genre with the most promising staying power of any type of music other than rock.
KHKS should be biasing in the rap direction. That's what top 40 is doing as a format. It's the will of the listenerbase's majority and of the record-buying public.

But there's also this thing called pop. It still sells incredibly well and should not be ignored.

That's the point that should be driven home.

Rap is a money tree it's easy to make cheaper because low studio cost. Rap = easy money.<P ID="signature">______________
