Tower Huggers

Saw something funny in a blog today, about Newspapers and Radio business models. It said that by now most newspapers have faced the fact that there is no going back, that their distribution will be multiplatform and referred to the denial by past management as them being "Dead Tree Huggers". It went on to say something like in Radio there are still plenty of "Tower Huggers" who think we are just in a recession, and that growth will come back.

Since we know that there is NO MEANINGFUL INVESTMENT in multiplatform distribution, regardless of what we may think or know as individuals, would you all agree that for the most part, our industry is still run entirely for the TOWER HUGGERS? That they are just squeezing out the last nickles before the fire sale? I think so.

Also, I forgot where the Blog was, so if someone knows and would like to give credit that would be nice.

The part that literally scares me is that the asset in television news, radio news, and the newspapers was THE NEWSROOM. The paper, airwaves just a method of getting that newsgathering to the public. As the strength of those distribution methods have imploded...the leadership has not recognized the news gathering value and based all their cuts on the business as currently defined. In the end ... will we have journalists who get the story; or will our entire game be based on the ability of A/P to find a good story and deliver it. When you have no depth in your newsroom, you have no "watchdog" skills on the people in power and bad things go unchecked.

It's interesting how people are freaking out about possible investigations into whether talk radio should change. They seem to be scared that we will once again have multiple points of view. That very suppression of multiple views is WHY we need to be looking into fairness in media. Doesn't mean it has to change...it's just time for a good look to see if people are smart enough for one-sided media or not. Unfortunately, I don't have much confidence that they are. Too many people willing to let a headline-grabbing host be their conscience because it's too much effort to "think" for themselves.

I think there are already multiple points of view available. Turn the radio dial and you will find dozens of hosts with different views. Even within the conservative talk circuit and the liberal talk circuit, you will find differing views. Rush Limbaugh doesn't own the airwave, you know. Less than 5% of the US population listens to his show.

Regarding the "newsroom" as it pertains to radio, it's been many years since radio was mentioned as the #1 source for news.
