Traffic reports on WHAS/Clear Channel

I guess thoses WLW guys have old habits that are hard to break. I heard Chuck mention that I-75 South to the Kennedy was moving along fine this morning. I hadn't realized they re-routed I-75. Must be re-routed for the replacement of the Brent Spence Bridge. ;)

Sounds like a new drinking game-- everytime a Cincy road or landmark is mentioned on a Louisville traffcic report ", take a drink of the adult beverage of choice. If it worked for Newhart then this should work. :)

Better yet when they mispronounce a local street or venue.

I sincerely hope they don't outsource Lexington but if they do then it might be comedy to hear an out of town voice mispronounce Athens-Boonesboro Road, Versailles Road, and Chinoe Road.

Ron Robertson (not Roberts) was the traffic reporter on WHAS. He and I lived about a block apart in the same small town (Vienna) in Southern Indiana back in the 70s. We also both used to work at WMPI in Scottsburg, which was 100.9 back then.

Dick Gilbert is a legend in Louisville (as you know), and he flew the helicopter himself. I often heard him key the air traffic control mic to acknowlege a received instruction. Our flight plan took us across the north side of the Standiford runways a couple of times a shift. I am not sure whether Captain Larry flew the craft himself or not, but the rest of us used pilots from our flight service, Whirl-Away Helicopters, over at Clark County. Bob Poe was/is the owner there, and at the time he had two Bell 47 helicopters (like the ones on M*A*S*H). I am pretty sure they are retired from service now, but they had a flat Lycoming six-cylinder with a high-lift cam in them that really ran well and sounded great when firing-off in the early morning. I think both Mark Travis and Ron Robertson "enjoyed" a power-off auto-rotation in those. A helicopter will fly with no engine, but the landing is rough. We used to practice those. They would restore power to the engine about 150 feet off the ground in practice, but Ron and Mark rode them to the ground.

In the mid-nineties after Ron left, there were several that filled-in including Doug McElvein (who's now doing mornings at KMOX in St. Louis) and me. It seems like Leesa Mitchell and Diane Williamson might have also flown a few times. This was before Mark Travis took the job. I was offered that job at one time but flying everyday in a piston-powered helicopter was not for the acrophobic. However, it was lots of fun. Especially when it was windy or I out weighed my pilot by 75-100 pounds. TILT is not just a word for pinball! I went to WJIE (for the second time) shortly after I turned it down.

In defense of the guy that mentioned I-75 running through Louisville, once when I was on afternoon drive with Meiners, I mentioned the east-west traffic on I-65 was running smoothly. Terry asked me if the east-west traffic was a dog or a cat, since the cars were driving north and south!

One other tidbit. I was always surprised at the number of swimming pools in the southwest end of Louisville, down near the Fairgrounds/Dixie Highway area. There were far more backyard pools in that area then the more expensive east end. I asked someone about that one time, and the speculation was that most of those folks had lived in that area for many years, worked at Ford or GE, had paid off their houses years ago and had extra money for those kind of amenities that a mortgage-poor east-ender might not have.

Thanks for letting me reminisce a little.
