Translators

I'm always hearing about new stations being created via translators in different cities. Do Dallas/Ft. Worth not have any?

Yes they do...

99.9 KSKY
92.9 KSKY
102.5 KTNO
95.9 KSKY

There are a couple of others I can't remember right now.

99.9 in Irving and 97.5 in Oak Cliff "translate" KDKR 91.3 out of Decatur.

They amazingly translate english into english! ;D

And then there's the infamous 95.9 in Garland translating a flea power station near Greenville/Sulphur Springs.

102.5 is a translator. The three fm signals simulcasting KSKY are fm booster stations operated under a special temporary authority (STA) from the FCC . This is to counter the illegal nighttime interference on 660 from two stations in Mexico.

95.9 in Garland is (illegally) feeding the "parent" station in Emory. It is supposed to be rebroadcasting a received signal off the air from the parent 200 watt fm signal from 60 miles away. I don't care how good that Yagi antenna at the 95.9 xmitter site on Bobtown Rd is, there is NO WAY it can pick up a 200 watt signal from 60 miles away!

Not to quibble over semantics, but the original applications from KSKY referred to them as "emergency repeaters." That's what the FCC calls them, hence they don't appear in the usual database locations...only in the applications and associated correspondence.

You're right. I looked up the application on file before I posted and I meant repeater but somehow booster got typed. Thanks for catching that.

No problem, and in reality these "repeaters" are very much like translators. That's except for the one in Dallas with 800 watts ERP, well above the translator max of 250.

It appears that none of these translators are significant enough or owned by a company that will put a meaningful format on any of them.

The original poster might have been looking for translators that rebroadcast HD2/HD3 signals, such as the case with 102.7 in Austin. Thus a "new" format not already available on analog FM.

I might add that Austin's comedy channel on 102.7 is very good. It's one of several translators in Austin with a variety of formats and most of them have nice coverage of the city.

That's exactly what I was talking about. Thanks Mediafrog.
