They just inducted Jack O'Shea into the West Virginia Broadcasting Hall of Fame last month in Huntington.

I worked with him when they split WKEE/AM & FM apart and programmed country on the AM (800). Needless to say he was not excited after being one of the most popular Top 40 DJ's in the Tri-State for so long on the "Big 80".

Do you recall WCMI (my preference over WKEE) when they were Top 40? Remember DJ's like "Tricky Ricky Cool"? I loved that station - reverb and all!!

Listening to radio in the late 60's in Huntington (WKEE, WCMI, WWHY, etc.) as a kid was the reason I wanted to make it my career - lived the dream and moved on. Happy times in the Tri-State.
 
I was reluctant to move here from Cincy at first. I am glad that I did now. Don't get me wrong... Nothing will ever take the place of Cincy in my heart. It is and will always be home. But WV has become my second home. Ppl here can be stupid just like ppl in Cincy can be stupid. Stupidity runs wild in every city. But the community here in WV is very friendly and warm.

Hey ncincy1, thanks for the sites on WKEE. Yes, I did listen to WCMI when it was Top 40 and but problem was, it's coverage wasn't all that great, so 25 miles out of town, you only had KEE to listen to if you were going south or east. I had friends in Paintsville and Inez and all the kids down there listened to WKEE. They really had no other choice, except to go to local eating places and play for jukebox and try to pick up local girls, at least until the fights broke out.
 
Yeah - WCMI on 1340 w/1,000 watts vs. WKEE on 800 w/5,000 watts - all on AM.
Not to mention WKEE FM with 100,000 ERP (horizontal and vertical).
Still, some great AM radio in the Huntington/Ashland/Ironton radio market back then.
Today in that area, like Cincy, radio is just awful - repetitive, predictable and mostly non-local.
Even as a former radio guy, I now get my "fix" on the internet and satellite radio in the cars (Sirus XM "60's on 6" is pretty good).
 
BTW: Someone's interested in the "out of market" topics we "hicks" have been discussing- the number of views is over 1,100+

I'm with you 100%! I remember a trip across country in 1975 and listened to great radio all over the country that had local programming and/or great jocks. Now it's all vanilla. Every city has a "lite rock" or a "warm rock" or a "classic" format, or some even have "oldies" that aren't really oldies. They play the same 400 songs and are boring as can be. I listen once in a while to WDJO, since it does have that local flair, and I like the format, but 99% of the time, it's XM.
