Trends part deux...

Nothing real exciting here. The River gets hit pretty good. The "Bull" spikes up. Project goes down some. Dave goes up a tad. 99x still in a flat funk. And 680 The Fan breaks away from 790. I'd like to know where they got the ratings edge?
Is Colin's show beating down the Midday show at 790? Colin continues to get better. I find myself listening more and more to his show.

Radio in Atlanta = Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Not sure if Colin is the reason, but 680 appears to have had a pretty good month. I think these numbers now reflect the Zone's extension of Mayhem until 11:00 AM and perhaps the early returns are showing that extending both the Morning Show and mid day show and removing the two hours of Dimino in between was not the way to go.

Certainly adding Dimino to Mayhem has added yet another voice to an already over crowded mix and an extra hour of that to boot.

So it may not be Colin as much to 790 messing up their own mix.

The funny thing is that reading Rodney Ho cover the Atlanta sports radio scene you would think that 790 is superior to 680.
It is clear that 680 is by far the most listened to sports radio station. Though I overall prefer 790, I think 680 has a lot of positive vibe. I am probably a 2 hour a day listener during commutes and 790 gets about 1:15 to :45 of my time.
680 clearly has the most dominant show in the market with Buck and Kincade. They have had the largest audience for years now and they continue to win the afternoon drive ratings war with the Stews most of the books. The amazing thing to me is the performance of the Rude Awakening against Mayhem. I prefer Mayhem most of the time, but it must be killing 790 to find themselves trailing Rude and Perry!
My guess for how this will all eventually shakedown are a few scenarios, as 680 finally seems to be creating distance.
1) 790 trims the fat and gets rid of Chuck Smith and maybe even someone like Cellini again. It would save some salary space and make them more profitable.
2) 790 attempts to break up Buck and Kincade by luring one of them up the dial. It would break up the signature 680 show and strengthen 790 by bringing their fan base with them.
3) Maybe 790 gets Buck and Kincade to leave and bring their show. I would have to believe they could pay them a lot more than 680 when you take into account the better advertising and sales machine at 790.
4) Does Kincade leave for ESPN Radio if the Dan Patrick rumors about retirement are true?
5) Does 790 make a drastic move and jettison a Chernoff and Smith and look for some fresh voice?
6) Do the Cumulus folks buy Jeff Pilot and make 790 their ESPN outlet for syndicated shows?
7) Do the Stews leave 790 and put the final nails in the coffin (unless 790 stole Buck and Kincade or one of them to do afternoon drive?)
All this is specualtion, but I believe that the 790 decision to go urban has killed them and allowed 680 to become the majority winner in sports in this town.

Here's a question. How did Viva go up almost a whole point?

The new PD fixed the music mix... Robbie Ramirez, formerly of KQMR in Phoenix, arrived earlier this year to complete the conversion of El Jefe and to clean up the format on Viva. It seems to have worked.

Immigration coverage?

Very little of that on Viva. More on the other station.

I agree... Dickey Bros are notoriously cheap, you would think that 790 could lure their show away. Does anyone know when their contract is up? In the meantime why not put Chris and Nick back on in afternoons? I loved their show and I think they were much better than Buck and Kinkade. Have the Stews do middays or an abbreviated version.

I still think Colin has the best show around right now. It's topical, not all sports, and fun to listen to.

Buck and Kincade already beat out The Bottom Line once, why go back and do that again?
I think it is clear that since Cellini joined the Morning Show, they have had a decline in ratings.
That can mean one of many things.
Either Cellini just does not mix well with the Bell, Steak grouping or the audience does not really like Cellini that much.
I would agree that 790 should just target either Buck or Kincade or the whole show.
I don't think that 680 is really that strong, just that 790 has really messed things up with that whole urban branding.
The Stews still do amazingly well to their target audience, but it is as if 790 is waving the white flag and giving 680 everything north of 285 in afternoon drive! That makes no sense.
I think that if Bottom Line was put back where it was successful, the 10-1 slot and then the Stews went back to the 1-4 slot, 790 would easily win the battle once again.
How about this idea. Mayhem pared down to a Steak, Bell and someone else pairing from 6-10, Bottom Line returns from 10-1, Oliver and Chernoff go Southern Comfort from 1-4 and Buck and Kincade or just Kincade from 4-7pm.
I think the Dickey's would find 680 back as an all news station within 2 ratings books.

You won't see any drastic changes at 790 unless the sales numbers begin to tumble. To this point, the revenue continues to roll in. The Stews are getting beat by Buck and John in local audience but their syndication deal is providing BLB with a nice additional stream of income to go with the local urban sales dollar which continues to be quite lucrative. So they may trail Buck and John in audience, but are probably outearning them for their station substantially at the end of the day.

Shapiro, Dimino and Bell seem to have built a loyal following of advertisers who continue to support 790 in a big way. So far, falling behind 680 in the Arbitron game has not slowed this down.

If the ad community is buying this lineup, they will keep rolling it out there, Arbitron numbers be damned. You would have thought that 680 would have been able to capitalize on their top position in audience and put some dents in 790's revenue, but it does not appear to have happened yet.

as much as I've always been a fan of 99x, how does it even get mentioned? it's not even on the air outside of HD or the InterWebs.

Stargazer jumped the thread, it's from 2007. Not that I mind, 2007 was a good year.

and who is robb tribble?

Great Idea: Tribble and Kincade. By getting rid of snooze-fest Buck and adding knowledgable Tribble, it's be a wonderful situation!

My thoughts for 790 ...

Mayhem - Dimino & Cellini ... add a news element.

Midday - Steak & Sandra Goldman ... they do a Regis & Kelly kibbitz-fest, a little spawtz, some restaurants, some "what guys want" shtick. [For the love of Beau Bock, put Brandon & Wolvie away!]

PM - Bell, Pollock, Tony Barnhart, Wes Durham, yadda yadda.
