trends

Love to hear some predictions about the next Vegas Trend. Mix on the way back up? KOMP up because KXTE has no Howard? Jack leveling off? KLUC vs, HOT? Star up or down? Coyote vs. KWNR? KKLZ vs, 97.1?

> Mix on the way back up?

Since the Fall book was unusually low for MIX, I'll guess that they will start trending up.

> KOMP up because KXTE has no Howard?

This might help KOMP continue to rise in the morning, but I'll guess KOMP will stabalize overall since they are already above their normal level. As for KXTE, the early numbers for Adam C in LA can't be very encouraging, although it's probably too early to tell if he will build up an audience or not based on a single extrap.

> Jack leveling off?

I'll guess yes since other JACKS across the country normally level off (or start declining) after this many months in the format.

> KLUC vs, HOT?

It will stay close, It wouldn't shock me to see an exact tie.

> Star up or down?

Up a little, but still one of the lower rated stations.

Coyote
> vs. KWNR?

I will be interested in comparing the LV country battle to the other markets which recently got new country outlets such as Denver and Seattle. Some people on the R-I Seattle board think the new country station there named the WOLF will beat heritage country KMPS the first book. That sure didn't happen here! We'll see if the gap between the two stations closes or not.

> KKLZ vs, 97.1?

If I remember correctly the POINT is droping off an unusually poor month, so they may go up a little. Has KKLZ responded to KXPT saying they are #1 for classic rock?

Some other thoughts/predictions:

Even if it seems they have nowhere to go but down,I could see SUNNY actually going up yet again next week. They will be dropping off their lowest leg of the Fall book, while still keeping their spectacular November and December.

I don't quite understand it, but starting this book Arbitron is changing the way they interview Hispanic households, the impact of this was already seen in the LA trend as Spanish language stations such as KLVE, KSCA, and KRCD all trended up. Arbitron will also start weighing Spanish dominant Hispanics seperatley. Will these changes help push KISF and KWID up to #1 and #2 in the market by the time the Winter book is released? Maybe David Eduardo can help explain these changes and the impact they might have (if he happens to be reading this).

But stations like KSSE, KBUE/A, etc. trended down.

A little clarification. What Arbitron has done is to finally seek poroportionality for English and spanish dominant Hispanics, not just "Hispanics." This means that formerly if Hispanics were 20% of the people in a market, Arbitron tried to place 20% of the diaries with Hispanics.

Now, if the 20% Hispanic population is 60% Spanish dominant, 12% of diaries will go to Spanish dominant Hispanics and 8% to English dominant Hispanics. If they get more or fewer than these percentages, the will, as with any cell, weight up or down.

Any cell is weighted so that its percentage in the total sample is equal to the percentage of that cell in the market.

Nope. The one major Hispanic market where there was no Nielsen data to buy by Arbitron is Las Vegas, so I believe they will not do language balancing.

In Las Vegas, not much... there is one other change, which is asking ethnicity in the diary at the indvidual level, raather than at placement at the household level. This may help to get a more balanced sample and eliminate some wobble.

Re: Arbitron changes.

Forget this chit! Arbitron should've printed a multi-lingual diary and made it easy for us to log what we listen too.
As much as our stations pay for their service, cant they roll out a better product. Arbitron should print an Englinsh/Spanish version of their diary.
My gilrfriend recieved one in the mail a few months ago. I looked at it and thought "This is nothing spectactular." Its easy to fill out and any fmwhore to do it! So that night FMWHORE helped here. The next Monday, he personally mailed for her so his station could get credit.

They send a bilingual diary to Hispanic households already.

They have for 25 years, at least.

> My gilrfriend recieved one in the mail a few months ago.

Unless she previously accepted, via telephone, to participate, she did not get an Arbitron diary. They are only sent after a phone contact.

It is all that is needed to register day by day 7 days of listening. The diary is the world standard for audience measurement in literate and semi-literate nations.
