Triangle & Triad Ratings...

As i reviewed the latest ratings for the Triangle & Triad, there are some stations
that had healthy gains and some notable ones who continue to erode.
First, WRAL-FM had one of their best books in many years, going from a 5.1 to
a 6.9, while WNNL(103.9 "The Light") rebounded to a 5.4, finishing #6 in the
Raleigh/Durham market, not bad for a "Urban Gospel" station.
Meanwhile, "Y-102.9" was only two tenths of a rating point with tying WRDU
which moved up to a 2.4, which is disappointing, but the biggest rating dip
belongs to WKSL-FM, which went from a 3.4 to a 1.7, look for a format change
at 93.9 soon.
And a footnote regarding the three sports outlets, "850 The Buzz" had a 0.9,
while "99.9 The Fan" had a dismal 0.8, and "620 The Bull" achieved a 0.6.
Who will be the first among these stations to drop this format?, stay tuned.
In the Triad, a station that has been around for a number of years has claimed
the top spot, WQMG-FM was #1, followed by "102 Jams", 107.5 WKZL, which
had one of there best books in a long time, and this is hard to believe, but two
of the Triad's well-known stations tied for #4, WMAG and WTQR, which in just
four books has gone from a 7.1 to a 5.7, the management has got to be quite
concerned that WPAW, which had a 5.6, could overtake them by this spring,
expect some changes at 104.1 soon.
As for the other stations, ratings are holding steady, so don't expect any of
them to change.

Yeah lets see if CC can switch 93.9 to something that will get let's say a 0.5 as it seems CC Raleigh is going for no ratings.
Kind of funny that WRDU as classic rock never did as bad as it is doing as country.
Way to go CC Raleigh.
VO Dude, care to share some old RDU numbers with us?
Looks like they should have left Sunny RDU and TRG alone.

I'm just waiting for some more bandwagon bitchin' about KSL. If my memory serves me correctly, there was alot of positive feedback on the KISS format once the ratings spiked up a bit. They did take a huge blow, but that's beccause someone made a dumb ass decision to go back to Christmas music even after Mix and Y both picked it up. The KISS listener doesn't want to hear "Chestnuts Roasting" sung by 20 different people, they want the same thing they've been getting! DUH!

And you don't flip a station after one bad book...I'm relatively new at this biz and even I know that.

Yeah CC has been known to flip a station after years of good books.
BTW Christmas music on 93.9 was dumb, but again we are talking about CC here.
Not the brightest bulbs in the box.

has wvbz changed yet? it will happen soon. is sister bill and uncle eloise going to be on monday? probably but not for long.

In reference to ncsradiogeek's comment about Chistmas Music, How much of an impact would that have on the ratings?
Also, now they are back to "normal", won't that have an affect on the next rating period?

Just curious,
Stuart

Christmas music usually kills in the Fall book .... but not this year in GSO. WMAG has gotten use to HUGE fall books because of Christmas Music .... this year they were 10th with adults 25-54 .... typical shares were in the 20's for Christmas music weeks ... this year the shares were in single digits. Ouch. Big ouch at CC in general in GSO. Significant losses and poor rankings. 25-54 full week WQMG, WPAW, WKZL, WSMW, WGBT, WJMH, WTQR, WMKS, WKRR, WMAG, WVBZ, WTHZ, WZTK, WSJS.

Christmas had minimal affect in the Triangle as well. Adult women in the third phase showed WKSL down, with both WRAL and WWMY up a tick. WRAL did have a strong showing, but their best month was Oct. Talk of a format change at WWMY has been in the works for several weeks.

Greensboro/Winston-Salem/High Point Ratings

Here's a little more detail on the Triad (Greensboro/Winston-Salem) ratings.

18-34 (Mon-Sun 6a-Mid)

#1 WJMH (102.1 JAMZ)
#2 WKZL (107.5)
#3 WGBT (94.5 La Preciosa)
#4 WQMG (97.1)
#5 WPAW (93.1 The Wolf)
#6 WMKS (105.7 Kiss)
#7 WKRR (92.3 Rock 92)
#8 WSMW (98.7 Simon)
#9 WTQR (104.1)
#10 WMAG (99.5)
#11 WEND (106.5)
#12 WVBZ (100.3 The Buzzard)
#13 WZTK (101.1)

Most of these were already posted, but here's a little more on 25-54 (Mon-Sun 6a-Mid):

#1 WQMG (97.1) up a share
#2 WPAW (93.1 The Wolf) up a share and a half
#3 WKZL (107.5) up a share
#4 WSMW (98.7 Simon) down almost half a share
#5 WGBT (94.5 La Preciosa)
#6 WJMH (102.1 JAMZ)
#7 WTQR (104.1)
#8 WKRR (92.3 Rock 92)
#9 WMKS (105.7 Kiss) up more than a share
#10 WMAG (99.5) down over a share
#11 WVBZ (100.3 The Buzzard)
#12 WTHZ (94.1 Majic) down over half a share
#13 WZTK (101.1)
#14 WEND (106.5)

Some other significant stations:
#16 WSJS (600 AM News/Talk) down more than a share
#18 WIST (98.3 Country Legends)

CC needs to go ahead and blow up 93.9 (although I like 93.9's current format) or 106.1 and put a urban on there...which would essentially give CC Raleigh listeners in almost all demographics

CC has had a good track record with urbans..look at norfolk va(5 urbanish stations tried and failed against WOWI...... the old WMYK 92.1 moyock nc...a few years later WBHH (same freq), then WWHV 102.1--WWBR 107.9 and WNRJ 106.1)) and richmond va....especially richmond since they dethroned long time leader power 92.1 WCDX a radio one station...which recently fired all the staff to rebrand itself as iPower...rumor is that if they don't turn a good book..heads are gonna roll..again....

it won't take much for them to murder WQOK which is largely voicetracked now from what I hear.....especially once they drop down to 50kw @500ft

most of my raleigh friends put up with the static from rimshotters WZFX and WJMH..which reguarly show up in the raleigh ratings

CC has one good thing left in G105... IMO an urban would rock that boat a little too much. I don't think they'll do that.

There was a plan at one time to go with a very young CHR Rhythm on TRG and let G105 be the River Alternative rock station. There has ALWAYS been "heavy" Sales pushback on anything that is Urban-like. Most recently (Summer of 2006), Urban AC was on the table at Smoketree and highly suggested by programming with Baisden in PM and Steve Harvey in Mornings. 93.9's upgraded 100kw would have smothered Foxy with their pieced together delivery system of a Class A in Durham and and a Class C in Tarboro 90 miles away---it might have done very well in the ratings, given an opportunity, but alas it was a Sales issue and the thought was they would rather sell a 2 share of Country and kill RDU than a 10 share of UAC on 93.9...go figure. Even with WCMC out of the way, it's a five year battle to parity with QDR and CC will need a solid morning show and an even bigger investment in TV marketing to get to the promised land. I wish them luck...Raleigh was an extreme challenge with some severe shortfalls on the Sales front, combine this with the fact that stock driven companies play by a whole different set of financial rules than a Curtis or a CBC, it makes for a complicated business model. G105 remains strong (thanks to Randi and Bob), too bad about Sunny (wow that's a low #), but I am sure they will turn that with a flip...River has some potential if they keep feeding it $$$---RDU will continue to be a long uphill winding putt on a slick green in hurricane force winds...

Does anyone advertise on Clear Channel stations except TLC Laser Eye Center and Fairview Garden Center? The stopsets on 100.7 have become predictable -- you're going to hear "Brad Rollins From Fairview Garden Center", then the TLC commercial, then MAYBE something else before going back to the music. I gave 93.9 a listen for a few minutes one day and heard exactly the same sequence.

I'm thinking that sales department has much bigger issues than what you already stated.

All things considered, I think they're doing pretty well with oldies. Sure the ratings are bad (12+ anyway), but so is the signal.

What the? Doing pretty well based on what? Ratings generate revenue. It's a throwaway station used for sales packaging only.

Relations generate revenue more than ratings.
"Sell the sizzle, not the steak" only works in general, broad terms, not direct face-to-face selling. In direct selling, people can tell you're lying when you're selling them something they are not asking to buy. People far away might be wowed when you say "We're #5 12-54." But that's still kind of doubtful that it makes more money.

Don Curtis has known that for a long time now, that radio gets results for advertisers, and the results are what you sell, not the ratings. Because ratings are not money, they are just curiosities and statistical numbers to anyone outside the radio loop.

And usually if you're bragging about them, you ain't out on the street, making money building relationships with clients. :p

Very well stated. Ratings are soooo over-rated! ;D Seriously, when did a rating ever buy anything from a retailer? Results are key. Even a small radio station can get results for clients if the offer is good and the schedule has frequency. People who only buy top-rated stations are getting ripped off. I've heard on the street that Talk 101 gets good results for their clients.
