Tribune puts out the "For Sale" sign

The only way Fox will return to Denver is if they convince the Broncos' owners or the NFL to move the Super Bowl champions to the NFC, and I don't see that happening as the owners are loyal to the AFC.

That would leave only Media General as the only plausible buyer since they already own KHON 2 (Honolulu) & (I think) WALA 10 (Mobile, AL)

On top of that, they're on the brink of acquiring KVVU 5 in Las Vegas as a result of the merger with Meredith & MyNet affiliate KRON 4 in San Francisco

Media General could easily take on both KWGN 2 (CW) & KDVR 31

The only other party would be Cox Media but I don't really see them coming to town IMO.....

But then too NOBODY saw Cox moving into Boston either, so.....

Cheers & 73 :)

I believe WALA-TV is actually part of the Meredith Corporation.

You realize, of course, that the Meredith/Media General merger is dead - and has been for some time now? Nexstar made a more lucrative offer to Media General shareholders, so they will be buying Media General.

I'd be careful about Nexstar. They would have to give up stations in markets like Memphis and the Quad Cities in order to take any or part of Tribune.

I was not aware of that. Before tonight, last I heard was that it was pending approval from the Feds

In that case, Meredith could probably buy the Tribune stations too (All of them). Thoughts ??

Nope. There would have to be spin-offs. In Hartford, Connecticut Merideth already owns WFSB Channel 3 (CBS) and Tribune owns WTIC-TV Channel 61 (FOX) and WCCT-TV Channel 20 (CW).

In KC Merrdith KCTV5/KSMOTV,Hearst KMBC/KCWE,Scripps KSHB/38 the Spot so maybe Sinclair, becuase it has Comet that other Tribune stations have but FOX4KC not yet,ASN on it's stations Cox or so on. Would have to find a company that has Antenna TV/This TV on it's stations.

i'm surprise no one has mention this yet, but i can see Tegna buying out the local CW station in my home town market of Dallas-Fort Worth KDAF 33 in to make a DFW Duopoly with WFAA (don't know if they can have one now that Gannett spun off the TV side under the Tegna name, since WFAA and Dallas Morning News aren't even owned by the same company anymore, due to A.H Belo spinning off the print side with the media side, which Gannett bought out) as well as the Houston CW station KIAH to make a Houston Duopoly with KHOU as well.

Speaking of Tegna, there's also Sacramento, where they could pair KXTV with KTXL. That way they could even the field against KCRA/KQCA and KOVR/KMAX.

The solution to this problem is simple.....

HARTFORD,CT - So WTIC would have to be sold to someone else (Media General, who owns WTNH 8 in New Haven, CT comes to mind here). Simple solution to simple problem

ST. LOUIS, MO While not mentioned in your reply, here's the solution I came up with

* Sell KTVI 2 (Fox) to either Media General (Who owns KHON 2 in Honolulu plus MyNet affiliate KRON 4 in San Francisco) or Cox Media (Who just bought WFXT 25 in Boston)

* Sell KPLR 11 to either Scripps or Hearst (Who will undoubedly put up with the current CW affiliation until ABC's current agreement with KDNL 30 is due to expire, at which point they'll try to lure the network away from KDNL as there'll be an established news department by then)

I don't see Sinclair buying KPLR as a backwards duo to KDNL NOR do I see Fox buying KTVI 2 now that the Rams have left town

KANSAS CITY - While also not mentioned, Meredith could sell WDAF 4 to Media General or Cox as well

As for KTXL 40 in Sacramento, CA (As someone else brought up), TEGNA could buy it & make it a duo with KXTV 10 (Why not ?? TEGNA already owns two MyNet affiliates)

Cheers & 73 :)

P.S. - And NONE of this covers the KTVK/KPHO mess in Phoneix either

I actually wish that WFAA could form a duopoly (or at least an LMA agreement just like the old indie KFWD/52 before flipping to Spanish) and KDAF would be a perfect fit to pair with WFAA. Unfortunately, due to the market's current duopolies (Fox owned KDFW/KDFI, NBC owned KXAS/KXTX, CBS owned KTVT/KTXA, and Univision owned KUVN/KSTR), the FCC won't allow another duopoly in the market (and this is the reason why I despise the DFW TV market, too many network O&O stations, but it is the #5 market). Otherwise, London Broadcasting would've allowed to give Tegna (then Gannett) the so-called indie KTXD, after selling all their stations to said company.

It would make a lot more sense with Tegna taking KIAH and form a duopoly with KHOU though.

Actually they can, since the market has 14 unique owners, and there would be 13 after another duopoly is formed. The FCC requires there be at least eight unique owners in a market after a proposed duopoly is formed.

Anyone who thinks any of the Big Four broadcast networks would be in the running, especially to move their main broadcast networks, waaaaay overestimates how much they care about broadcast, and anyone who thinks Fox would buy stations to move to a VHF virtual channel overestimates how much ANYONE outside these boards cares about that. If any of those things were a factor, Fox would have gotten Tribune to move Fox to KWGN as soon as it entered common ownership with KDVR, ABC would have ditched KDNL for KPLR a looooong time ago, and NBC wouldn't be about to move to what's basically a cable channel in Boston with a perfunctory, only-partially-covering OTA subchannel simulcast. If any of the Big Four networks were in the running, it would probably be ABC or CBS just to form a duopoly and stop those stations from falling into the hands of anyone who might actually use them to compete with them.

In my fantasy world, Time Warner buys Tribune's big-market, non-Big 4 stations, like WPIX, KTLA, and WGN, buys out CBS' half of the CW, and makes a genuine effort to become the fifth major broadcast network, but even if it were ever going to happen it might be too late for it to have an impact.

Except (And unless I'm mistaken) KDNL doesn't have a local news operation - And ABC DOES care about THAT

Unless they convert WGN America to an OTA network, these stations aren't gonna do a thing as the Tribune spin-off has no bearing on the operations (Or future) of The CW network itself

Just the FACTS Jack.....

Cheers & 73 :)

Does this mean the return of The WB?

Definitely agreed there! :)

I was short on time and didn't get to complete my thoughts earlier. I'd like to see the return of full time independent stations but only if they had a lineup similar to what they had before Fox, UPN, WB, and CW came into existence, with syndicated reruns of classic TV shows, cartoons, game shows, and movies, not trash talk and infomercials, which take up most of the local time of stations now. But like it was brought up in the thread about bringing back daytime game shows, I know it probably won't happen. :(
