Trio goes dark!

One week after Power Country, Inc's trio of stations in northern Florida went dark, Newman Media flipped 1340 WDSR/97.1 W246BY Lake City to Country. Now branded as "The Falcon", the former Oldies station is taking advantage of the opening left by the demise of Power Country.

And they've brought over some of the former WQLC people to voice track the new station, providing some continuity for the listeners.

While several continue to fight on whose the better turnaround expert, I've reached out to Mr. Savage on what can be done to save these stations. Current experience and track record can only help. www.catcountry.org with stations in Kansas, Tennessee, and Colorado. All while living in Palm Coast, FL

I have no doubts that Mr. Savage will resolve the matter and eventually sell the stations. And, while it is true that time is of the essence, in that the longer these stations are silent, the tougher job anyone will have making these stations any kind of a success. However, in this case, I do not believe it makes much of a difference in how soon either of these stations return to the air since the damage has already been done. There are certain things that can and should be done in the form of damage control to prevent any further damage, but for the most part, the worst that can happen already has taken place. And I feel very badly for the owners. It has already been stated that the business community is reluctant to do business with the stations due to the IRS involvement. Therefore, once this current situation is finally resolved, whomever eventually owns and operates these stations will start over from scratch creating new stations, new format, new branding, and new imaging, and will place new management in charge whom will need to immediately begin developing new rapport with the business community and local listeners.

To WTAE 1250, if you can do anything positive to bring these stations back to solvency, then I wish you the best in doing so. Perhaps Mr. Savage may contact you once the dust settles and a solid game plan in underway. Good Luck!

Agreed, at this point you'd likely have more success going to the advertiser community as a new business that happens to be on those frequencies, as opposed to trying to pick up where the previous operation left off. Distance yourself from the baggage.

It may be best to wait until all pieces of the puzzle are settled before returning to the air, and come back with a bang if finances allow. A well done restart is essential.

How will WAJP in Perry take to the other country station going dark, or have they already changed themselves?

WAJP doesn't seem to care enough about their signal to be a player.

And that is a real shame, too, Alan, considering the WAJP C3 license has some value. With WNFK off the air, how does WFDZ and WPRY appear to be doing?

Last time I went through, WPRY AM was off the air. I didn't think to check WFDZ.

On the air, but very low modulation levels.

Are there any normal stations still operating down there? Seems like they are either all off the air, about to be broke, are barely on the air or are under indictment (or should be)....

How's things going for 104.3 in PC?

I thought that was normal ;D ;D ;D

Last time I was in PC 104.3 was on the air with black gospel and preacher programs. It does seem to have the community supporting it decently for a new station that "started all over from zero" in April.

I will be in PC for a day or two later this month. Maybe I'll call and try to get a tour. Depends on our schedule while we are there.

In trying to get this thread back on track, the website for Power Country is gone giving us even more thought the station will never return to the air as Power Country and will likely be sold off. At this point, could Newman actually buy 102.1 and not have it affect any potential ownership caps that are out there? After finally reading about John Newman's track record, he would most certainly know how to get that station back on the air if he bought it and put the Falcon on it and make a big run with it.

Thoughts anyone?

Alan there is nothing to see at 104.3....just a PC feeding the transmitter and VERY basic studio facilities.....I would waste my time.

Yeah, Alan can join us at Captain Anderson's! Much more productive use of time. But, Alan, when ya got the radio bug, it's fun to kick tires on a car with no engine, right?

Speaking of "tire kicking", earlier in my career I would search for radio and TV towers. Most of the time there was nothing at the site other than the tower and a small transmitter building; but sometimes I would find an actual radio (or TV) building that housed the studios and offices.
