Tropical Storm Heading Toward Houston Will 740 Step Up

Chuck Tiller said:
By that time, the remnants of the fast degrading storm will pass and there will be no reason to cancel the Astros broadcast.

They just announced that the Astros will be moving to 790 (weather permitting -- in Chicago!) and that both Rush and Hannity will go to the 9-5-0 today.

We had tornadoes confirmed in the western Metro and near the city line in Franklin Park. Our station WBBM AM (NEWSRADIO 780) did wall to wall coverage for a few hours, with the fact this squall line came out of nowhere..

From what my sister said at the command center, more people were freaking out at the possibility of the cops not letting residents back into their homes.

KLVI was on KIOC at 0700 that morning.
The billboards were "all over the place".

I was listening to KTRH on Tuesday during their storm coverage. It was so disappointing to hear the
mid-afternoon male anchor (I didn't catch his name) say, time after time, to callers: "Where you at?"
Instead of "Where are you?" And I had to finally turn the dial when I could no longer take the traffic girl
announcing that "Traffic is brought to you by Modia Home Thee-AY-Ter."

Yep. I guess this means we be in Texas. But one would think that being in the fourth largest city in the US,
our media announcers would sound a bit more worldly and sophisticated.

I remember, years ago of course, when TV and radio announcers were held to very high standards for correct
grammar and pronunciation. Sadly, this is not the case not anymore. It seems that no one even pays attention to that anymore.

Ve-HICK-le vs. VE-ickle (the H in vehicle really is silent)
IN-surance vs. in-SURE-ance
DEtails vs. de-TAILS
DUBya vs. double-you

Oooh, don't get me started.

"Hidey, Bubba! How's yer mom-n-em? What chu got to sale on the Bulletin Board today?" "I got fresh damaters..."

I miss my childhood in East Texas Radio... Bulletin Board ads, obituaries, and specials at the Dairy Queen.

High school football games... "Boy howdee... did you see the way he run with that ball?"

Yes, in this market the voices shouldn't sound like banjos. (don't go nukeular on me...)

The traffic girl on all the Clear Channel stations for the last few weeks has been Kat Cortez (sp?), though the CC traffic anchors identify themselves only on 740 and 790 for some reason. She is a fine DJ but her traffic reports make you miss Natalie Fitzgerald, who does a good job but, of course, we should still have Elizabeth Rose!!

Kat is identified on Sunny, in the mornings, too.

I also miss Elizabeth, though. I'm not sure there's anyone in Houston as polished for traffic or as passionate about it than Elizabeth Rose. She's a fine DJ in her own right, also.

CC's firing of Elizabeth for the reasons they cited is still a shame (Most companies would have likely given a suspension and let it go) but then again, if you work at 740 Keep the Resume Handy, you know not to take those call letters, lightly. Any day, your number could be up.

Worldly and sophisticated media, in a lot of ways, seems to have gone by the wayside and it has been that way for a while now, sadly. I have several friends, still on the air in Houston, and if I told them how many times I have rolled my eyes at their vocabulary flubbing or momentary doses of illiteracy, while I have listened at home or at work, I'd do nothing else, all day, besides correcting them and teaching them grammar skills.

But, what can I say? In regards to CC and traffic, I'm likely being harsher than warranted; CC's cluster has been depressing to me, as a whole, for quite the long time now.

I rarely listen to Houston's CC cluster**** any more. They got rid of the local talent on 740 so its all syndicated with the exception of some guy named Berry who belongs in a much smaller market, say the Rio Grande Valley. In fact, I can pick up Astros games (if I'm a masochist) on XM radio, so there is really no need for KTRH. Its not like they carry breaking news or anything.

Ditto that.

You know, KTRH is so bad right now, I can already see them get their "local" news of off satellite feed. Just sad

I'm curious to see what the count would be of J.P. Pritchard fumbling his lines on any given morning.
