Troy Hayden Leaving Fox 10

Interesting note about Troy Hayden. At least for this week, he is going to continue to co-anchor Today in AZ as well as the 4pm and 5pm news. They must have seen a ratings bump in the mornings, because a split shift is very difficult. The poor guy has to be tired.

And what is going on with the 12 Weather situation. It is beginning to look like AZ family. Chris Dunn (who is freelance) did the weather over the weekend. Why couldn't Lauren Rainson or Krystle Henderson fill in?

According to this article in the Arizona Republic, Krystle is still doing the weather during the day, albeit now she'll just be doing it during NBC News Daily at Noon & 12 News at 1 & also doing work on "specialized weather & environmental journalism". Ginger Jeffries, as of July 29th, is doing weather for Today in AZ in the morning. Where is Krystle Henderson? What we know about the 12 News meteorologist

Correct, but my point was that 12 News has been fine with presenting a recorded forecast during NBC News Daily and 12 News at 1pm (I'm assuming the 10 people who watch that newscast don't really mind). Suddenly, they have to call in the freelance meteorologist when they have at least two people who could have easily filled in. Specifically, 12 News Weekend Today was not airing during the Olympics -- so Lauren Rainson should have been available. Plus, the article forgot to mention that Stella Sun (when not on vacation) is now doing the weekend evening weather.

If they are keeping all these weather anchors long term, I'm assuming that Lindsay Riley will be leaving the station when she has her third child. Otherwise, there is no need for 12 News to have FIVE meteoroloists.

Five meteorologists is probably the right number if they want live weather in every show. Having live weathercasts during all shows pretty much means scheduling 3 meteorologists each day, M-F, otherwise someone is working way longer than an 8 hour day.
Additionally, the weekend schedule requires two forecasters.

Since people in the US work 5 day work weeks, that's how you get to 5 people.
I personally think recorded weather is fine, especially in Phoenix of all places.

And here I thought the main reason he left KSAZ was because he was tired of getting up at oh-dark-thirty.

Actually, you can do it with four. You have the two weekend meteorologists split the duties on the weekday 1pm newscasts.

Since virtually everyone now has a cell phone and you can get worldwide weather at the touch of a button why do we need TV weather casters at all?

We could stretch this analogy to almost anything. To me, the question is who is going to blink first? Which channel would have maybe one or two on-staff Meteorologists and the rest of the times are recordings or the anchors giving current temperatures and future forecasts? Are are the other channels going to hype "we have live weather reports?"

Fox10 made that choice since the beginning of their weekend morning newscasts, where the anchors read the weather. ABC15 made that choice on weekend mornings, after they moved Iris to the weekday mornings. 12News does recorded forecasts it from time to time (a lot last year/early this year with overlapping pregnancies), particularly on the 1pm news and the weekend newscasts. Lauren Rainson confirmed it on FB. I've even caught 3/5 doing it at Noon (recorded forecast with no current conditions or interaction with anchor).

b4, Fox 10 only has three meteorologists. So, with vacation, they pretty much have to do "anchor-read" forecasts. The only issue becomes if there happens to be an unexpected severe weather event (i.e. monsoon) and the weather anchor is not there live. This happens so rarely here that it is perhaps worth taking a chance.

So Troy has been on 12News for several months. How is his pairings with Tram and Caribe going?

I don't get to watch at 4 or 5, but Troy has subbed for Mark at 6 and 10. He seems to do fine with Caribe. The only thing I've noticed is Troy's voice is not the "strong broadcasters voice" like Mark or former anchor Jonathan McCall. So, it has taken a little adjustment on my part. For AZFamily viewers, it's like the difference between Jared Dillingham and former anchor Brandon Lee.

One more thing for Troy Hayden fans. During the football season, he has been solo anchoring Sunday nights at 10pm. So, you might be able to catch him then (if you are not a regular 12 News viewer).
