True Oldies 1170....

Well it was in the QC Times that Cumulus has changed the format of AM 1170 to Scott Shannon's True Oldies format.

Let the speculation begin.....

I think it is a good idea as it will now force Clear Channel to make a decision with their FM properties....

If people will flock to this true oldies on AM, which Cumulus gets on a heritage signal, they have to decide what they want to do with KUUL FM. They will lose ratings as it stands with KUUL, so either KUUL goes backwards into the 50's and 60's, away from the 70's and 80's it features now to take them on and keep that audience, or they stay the course and take a hit.
Either way, Cumulus wins because if KUUL follows the true oldies format path backwards, then 97X will pick up that audience. If KUUL ultimately does change format, Cumulus gets those listeners by default, and then they will have to protect, in my opinion....B100 when ...101.3 KISS FM debuts.

Good. One less place for O'Reilly to spout his idiocy.

Do you really think that people will switch from an FM station to an AM that has horrible audio like 1170?

At least it would be nice if they would fix the processing, transmitter, or whatever the problem is over there.

I don't see it making much of a difference. Especially if they don't promote it outside of the station itself. Which I don't expect them to do much of. It's tough to get people to switch to the AM band as it is; much tougher for music. Besides, as mentioned, that signal has never been good. If anything, should've put this format on 93.5. That's the station in that cluster that needs the shot in the arm.

I think they will wait through one more book before messing with Star.
Cumulus tends to have a formula for trying formats and deciding when to flip them.
And 2 books ago Star had really great ratings in the target demo.
So I imagine that past performance is allowing them another try in the ratings.
I did see on MIX 96's website a mention of having transmitter problems and actually
some photos the engineers took while a 1,000 feet up the tower.
So who knows, maybe while Mix is having problems, people will float around the dial
a bit and find Star again, and this time they might stay long enough to make a dent
in the Fall book.

And why not do a talk format on an FM stick in this area?
I hate AM. I know it can sound good, but it seems like most of the time, it doesn't.
And we are all aware of the signal issues 1170 has anyway.
Cumulus would be better served to either sell the license or just take it dark.
And there has to be all kinds of open spectrum in the area, why not get a license
for an open frequency and put up another tower?
Wait, nevermind. That costs money...
I'm sure this new format is ALL barter anyway.

And about the 101.3 KISS idea, there is a Kiss Country in Cedar Rapids.
I think it would cause some confusion to call it that.
If anything, I think calling it Power 101 would be appropriate for the market.
Especially after having a semi-successful pirate operation called Power in the QC.
Just invoking that name would get immediate attention from listeners who were
fans of the pirate station. Even though the format would be apples and oranges
to what power 103.3 had, it wouldn't matter.
Immediate press coverage, instant listeners and a serious horserace between them and B100.

Oh and you can bet the farm that they would have Ryan Seacrest in morning drive.

So what's the over/under on the flip of 101.3 happening in the spring?
I've got a hundred on April 2009.

uh....

The Power name would be more synonymous with the VERY successful station that was on 98.9 (before changing names to All Hit 98.9).

Ryan's show is middays or afternoons...

But in appealing to the 18-34 females, the don't remember Power 98-9.

They're more likely to remember 2 years ago versus... umm

how long ago was it they we're called Power 98-9?

98-9 ended it's run as ALL HIT 98-9 which has been
reworked into the tagline for "All the Hits, B-100" these days.

I think back when it was Power 98-9 was when I first started listening to radio
around 1990 to 1991. I don't remember when they changed away from that...
I do recall the Metallica record being so huge that Enter Sandman was in rotation
on 98.9 during the day. I even recall being shocked to hear it!

That explains what I was hearing on 1170 one night a couple weeks back in Minnesota. Yeah...bringing back the KSTT calls/brand would be very cool. I wonder if cloud company would realize that and do it.
