True Oldies Channel

Many stations call there self classic hit's hoping to fool people I think, they basically sound like a classic rock station leaving out the dance side of the classic hit's. Wish Randy could build back his brand of stations faster, he sure can design some really great sounding stations compare to what I have heard in the radio industry the last 5 - 10 years.

Yes, we need someone to wake up these corp. radio people, Randy is the only 1, that can do it and hopefully he can do it again soon.

Are you refering to Randy M.? I thought he was in Chicago now.

He is getting stations in some area's, He has stations in little markets about 4 hrs. from Nashville...

You're right about "lack of talk" from TOC but it's not a downside. It's a controlled element to avoid somebody rambling on and on. Sure radio guys would like to hear a dude talk up to the vocal and some jingles and reverb and built in excitement ala WABC days, but to a lot of people not having heard great djs in a long time they've come to be able to live without them and don't miss them.
The Dan Ingram's and Charlie Tuna's and "real don steels" might be for us to remember as that kind of skill hasn't been taught today. The current culture sees it as kind of a "phony balony" kind of communication they don't take seriously in today's world. Sort of like the fast talking used car commercial nobody seems to remember.
in speaking about Dan Ingram & Charlie Tuna, you mentioned them as examples of "Great DJ's" & having "Great Skill" in the same paragraph, and YET... YOU(speaking for the "Current Culture") see that as a kind of "Phony Balony" kind of communication.... i guess this is opposed to "Crappy DJ'S" & "Little Skill"-which is what Radio is (for the most part), giving us now.

for whatever TOC is, it does nothing to put "Local Radio" people on the air or give somebody in the Local community a JOB.

Barter is less expensive.

With the economy the way it is, I think it's the other way around. I would love to hire a secretary, but I can't afford it, so I do it all, until my wife gets off work, then she is the secretary, now that's barter! Everyone but one person that is involved with my station is family. The one person that is not related to me is my play by play, sports guy.

just an honest question here... if you are not making enough money to hire a secretary, why do you continue own a radio station?
this can't be fun.

I'm going to try to answer your question without being a jerk, and upset others on this board. AM Radio doesn't make much money anymore. It's actually gotten worse, and lots of AM's are going dark. Read the radio trades and you'll see this. Lot's of "stand alone" AM's do not have a secretary. WNAH-AM 1360 is another example of a station that doesn't have a secretary. Why hire a secretary just to answer the phone when I can do that myself? There is not enough work for me to give a secretary at my station, so it's really a waste of money.

Radio, especially AM, is PC controled now, unless a owner decides to hire jocks, and that cost money, and my experience with local jocks is that even if I have one on a volunteer basis, they tear up equipment and break station rules. I have run 3 stations with jocks, including my own, and what a headache.

Now don't get me wrong, if they are a good jock, they would be working at the FMs, and if I owned an FM, it would be live, due to I would most likley be making money to pay them, but I'm a tuff boss to work for! Ask anybody who has worked for me. In 1990, I was assistant P.D. at 92Q under then Program Director Jay Dubard. Jay would go out of town on the week-ends, and my phone, ringing off the hook with problems from the jocks! Jay taught me to be tuff and not to take any "bull" off of the other jocks, and make them follow format! I learned alot from Jay back then. I was his "model" jock.

I continue to own my station because I'm semi-disabled, I can not get a full time job, and I save money by not having a payroll. I just wanted a part-time secretary so I can got to the doctor when I need to. Like I said, my wife is the secretary, so I schedule my doctors appointments around her schedule, if I need to keep somebody at my station.

I've said this on this board before and everyone gets upset when I say this. My station will never be for sale, I'll shut it off and turn in the license, before I sell it to somebody else. Also, it's in my will, on file with my attorney, if I die, this station is to go dark, the license turned into the FCC, and the real estate and equipment sold off.

Like I said, I didn't want to sound like a jerk, but I have to compete with 3 other stations in Sumner County alone, one with 5,000 watts and has been here since 1948, with a great reputation. Besides, this is my hobby as well as a business and I live for my station. My dad & I built it, and it's not for sale, ever!

If my station was an FM, the situation would be different. There are plenty of more reasons why I don't have a secretary, but I'm not going to go into it.

I'm sure I'm going to get attacked on my comments, but we are almost into 2010 and radio is changing. FM has a great future, but AM, well it's a wait and see thing. Congress and the FCC is making some crazy decisions that's going to kill off the small town and small market AMs. I've been reading the trade mags, and things don't look good for AM, and it bothers me. We have more than FM Radio to compete with. The internet is one!

I'm kind of surprised that Nashville doesn't have oldies on either an HD2 or HD3 station. I'd figure there would be some demand for it, and it might actually help sell some HD Radio units.

You're right, I been thinking the same thing. I saw a report on the local news tonight that consumer electronics prices are going down. This means that more HD Radios might get sold, especially around the upcoming holidays. There is plenty of room for 2 Oldies stations in this market on one of the FM station's HD2 or HD3 Channels. This has always been a strange market, in my opinion, and now, we have one big "corporate" operator, that has made a mess in this market. It does need to happen. It would be nice if Citadel would put WLS-FM on one of WKDF’s HD2 or HD3 channels. This would fill a gap in the market.

As I made mention in my previous post, the internet, iphones, are the future of radio. The FM Band can also help AM stations who may not get an FM Translator, due to the new rules that Congress and the FCC has now decided about LPFM stations protecting the third adjacent channels. They’re going to drop that rule, making it harder for AM stations like mine to get an FM Translator, that we really need.
