"True Oldies" coming to 106.7?

Baby Boomers = $

This not being able to sell oldies stuff really isn't washing anymore. It's based on the old agency way of doing things because in the past the seasoned citizens didn't have much expendable income.

But right now we have about a bazillion baby boomers getting ready to retire. And more so than any retiring generation before them--they have $$$$$$$. $$$$$$$. And more $$$$$$$. (yeah I know recession, blah blah blah, but if you have more cash to begin with, you come out ahead of those that didn't)

Do you think advertisers are just going to ignore them cause they're old now? Right now media planners all over this country are trying to find a way to reach into the minds and pocket books of these retiring baby boomers.

So what we're dealing with here is the new oldies style. Probably avoiding most if not all of 50's music and starting the playlist in the early 60's. Not a classic rock format as it will be wider in variety but some classic rock will be there.

Very well put. I fit in that catergory. Not to be a braggart, but I am worth a few million. Wish I could buy a station.

I am 25 and I love Oldies...but I am very picky. If you ignore the 1950's like the never existed well I'll ignore your station. Just keep some 50's music in the mix. That's all I ask. Scott shannon does that with his format. Back in its hayday WLKQ did it to perfection with the largest library of Oldies in the South. It was awesome! Oh for the good ole days when I was in High School!

Being someone who grew up in Los Angeles listening to the legendary 93-KHJ, I would think the way to make a successful oldies station is to recreate what they did. "Boss Radio" as it was termed was an extremely successful Drake-Chenault format that revolutionized radio during that era. I firmly believe that if you follow that model (which really hasn't been done since) there would be such an audience surge in listenership that you could be a ratings winner AND make lots of money in the process. Who knows, you might even re-define the radio format. Playlists were very broad because the appeal was so create a station that does the same. Sure, play the rock and roll hits (Beatles, Stones, Who) along with some pop (Dave Clark Five, Raspberries), throw in some R&B (Otis Redding, Gladys Knight, Stevie Wonder) and maybe a bit of the mellower stuff (Dionne Warwick) with a splash of novelty (Herb Alpert and the TJB, Alan Sherman). Then, add announcers who have tons of personality and care about their audience. Not ones like we have today who talk down to their listeners as though they were idiots. The result could be something wonderful and may just revive radio. Either that or we're doomed.

Unfortunately, all this effort costs a bit of $$$ and most stations don't seem to realize that in order to make any kind of decent money, you MUST SPEND A GOOD CHUNK OF IT TO DO SO! Anyway, that's my opinion...(ought to be yours...hee hee). ;D

I know who Drake was (WAKE, etc.) and have heard of Drake-Chenault, but would you please define it for some of us?

the "listen live" link is at the upper right of the page
Charlie Tuna's on tomorrow (Sun) 2 - 5pm eastern

Whether this actually happens in Atlanta or not, "True Oldies" is the best they could come up with to
compete in DC??? Did it take them one bathroom break or two to birth that spectacular future
disaster?

I can see the headlines tomorrow:
"Cheapdel flips jazz to "True Oldies" another dead format, will promote it nada, demise in months, if not weeks."

They are going to come up with $20 M in cuts and savings according to various reports.

WHY ARE THEY NOT GETTING IN THE GAME AND TRYING TO INCREASE REVENUES by at
least $20M over six months??? Flawed, typical, knee-jerk reaction.

Citadel --- you have the chance to do it different and do it right and this is your best shot.
Laughable.

I'm worried big time about my job. I make next to nothing but I am a "cost of doing business."
Someone posted a while back that if you're not putting money on the table you are always at risk. Doesn't count if you facilitate the table or the room the table sits in.....you gotta be the guy bringin' the green to the table to count as non-expendable.

Even if you are putting the green on the table nowadays, it's still not enough.....
