There are some interesting posts in this string.
GC, my posts on this subject should clearly show that I am not calling for a return of the format to the way it was in the COOL 96.9 days. The format needed to evolve and it has done so. It’s this updated sound that I’d like to see in Jacksonville.
You mentioned Tom Murphy and I often think of talent such as Tom who are now tasked with jobs that don't really reflect skill sets. OK. Here’s a little dream sequence. If I won megabucks in the lottery and could own a station/call the shots (It would be Greatest Hits), I'd bring Tom onboard in a leadership role. He’d have a full plate in my dream. LOL. I'd make Tom the Production Manager. His commercials speak for themselves. I'd also have him involved in sales. Tom's warm personality, his radio/market knowledge, his ability to connect with people and his credibility are critical in getting sales results. He would be a great mentor for the sales team and he would represent the station in Chamber of Commerce meetings. And for good measure, he could do fill-in and /or VT as he is missed by many and still has market voice recognition. Maybe all these tasks would be too much for one person and this is just my dreaming anyway but my point really is experience is priceless. Not limited to radio, business tends to discard older people with reckless abandon. There may be exceptions but it’s just today's business reality and it's a shame there is so much expertise - lost.
Pocket-Radio - I never made the safety net connection between WSOS and WEJZ. I can see your point and it makes sense. Also, WSOS is sounding better overall once again. If they can remain consistent in their overall sound, plus with a better signal, the odds increase that their audience will grow while helping WEJZ siphon off their oldest listeners. It could be a win-win. Is this enough to prevent another AC player in Jax? Maybe. Time will tell.
