Trying to remember a name

Michael Quinn was on "dub duty" for about 14 hours that weekend, and I believe he did one airshift before calling it quits. I don't know what happened to him after that.

Someone told me Michael Quinn became a priest.
That's unconfirmed if not untrue.
And Norm Hill is in the Carolinas still driving a ragtop.

Thanks for the update on Norm Hill....he was quite the character. Does anyone remember Ken Jeffries (sp) he used to work at WAZL in the days of Jim Boyle....Dave Donlin...
 
Jim Drucker became a priest(Byzantine Catholic), some might remember him from doing overnights at WARM. I was never quite certain as to his status, but I don't think Jim was ever a full-timer. Good jock, nice smooth and friendly voice. Some referred to him as Jim Drucker, the ALL Night..., well, you get the picture. Jim, and this will sound totally weird to many, is a very close friend of Pennsylvania's Lt. Governor.

Mike Quinn? Last I knew he was back in his hometown of Altoona(WFBG), but that was a long time ago. Mike was a great jock, tight and bright and all that happy crap, but he was a real hot-head. Very distinctive voice, as I recall.

Wasn't WSAN doing AM stereo? I seem to recall they thought going AM stereo was going to be the salvation of AM. AM stereo was no more than crackly, distorted, tinny radio with channel seperation. And who ever had an AM stereo receiver?

I have an old WARM survey that has Jim's photo (drawing) on it and it DOES state Jim Drucker 12 am to 6 am. He was a full time jock there.

Thanks, I was never sure about that. What year(s)are we talking here? I'm guessing late 60s/early 70s maybe. Oddly, I've googled Jim many times and turned up no more than an obscure reference to him celebrating a mass in Hazleton.


Seems to me that Mike Quinn had a religious component to him.

Mike was an okay guy, but seemed to be angry with the world most of the time. He wanted off that 7-midnight shift at WARM but whenever another shift opened, they gave it to someone else. He was pretty tight with RJ Harkins, WARM's overnight guy. So, while on the subject, where is RJ Harkins these days?


(Although I don't know if he still has that nervous leg condition when he opens the mic).

Man, I just thought of at least 3 newsies who had quirky movements, gestures, mannerisms that surfaced the minute they opened the mic. I have no explanation for it, but news people seemed to more prone to these gesticulations than jocks.
 
WSAN was one of the first AM stereo stations at the time. My father was the PD when they went stereo during the Unforgettable (or was that Unforgivable?) format in 1982-1983. My dad was sooooooo excited at the thought of AM stereo and I distinctly remember saying to him as a teenager, "So you're going to sort and seperate your crap before you give it to me???". Then owner Harold Fullmer gave everyone an AM stereo receiver that Christmas. You had your choice of a Sony portable unit or a walkman. I still have my walkman today. Neat little unit that gave you a choice of which AM stereo system was being used. I guess that was really one of the first major problems with AM stereo. The FCC took forever to settle on a universal format. Car manufacturers couldn't decide on what system to put in their vehicles. I also remember KYW being AM stereo. What in the world did a news station need AM stereo for??? Their spots?
 
Great to see Ken Jeffries on the website...wow he has been on quite the radio journey...got some more names for you. Melanie Apple, Joe Cepan....and Dick Jeffries..(sales and weekends on air).

My guess is that your Dad interviewed me at least once at WSAN for the morning show job. I am so sorry, but I don't remember his name. He treated me very well, and seemed to genuinely want me at WSAN, but we never could come to terms.

Melanie Apple I mentioned elsewhere on this board. Within the last year or so I spotted a story about her on the front page of the Harrisburg Patriot-News. It wasn't so much a story about her radio career as it was about her battling and beating some life-threatening illness. From what I recall, she left here to take a job in Harrisburg, maybe at WHP, but is presently out of the biz.

Joe Cepin is the owner and manager of US One Powersports Center in St. Augustine, FL. I spoke with him earlier this year and he's lovin' life. He turned a small operation into a multi-million dollar one. A great success story for a great guy.

Marge Stevens (WILK - WARD) was most recently doing afternoon drive news at WNLK/WSTC - Norwalk/Stamford, CT

Bryant was a hoot. Watching him was alone worth the price of admission. Saw him jock at WBAX once and doubt I can describe what he did whenever he keyed the mic, but I'll try. Jim would take his left arm and stretch if over his head, grabbing his right phone with his left hand, while all the while doing this unusual contortion with his head, sort of twisting and turning it. The end result was that he sounded terrific, but looked like he was auditioning for a circus act. What ever happened to him? I'm also thinking of a guy who did mornings on WILK, circa 72/73/74. Can't remember a name.

Steve was one many who was vicitmized in the oft-mentioned purges at WARM, the ones executed by Rod Burnham. Many years after Burnham did his damage, he told a former WARM staffer that he was truly contrite for all the pain and suffering he'd caused. How 'bout another Rod, Rod Raeger? Raeger(Rod Rice)was married to Kelly Reed, who we've wondering about, too. Where are these people?

YES! Thank you, sir, that is it - Chuck McCann. I did the tape-resume-phone call dance for that job, didn't even get an interview. What pained me was that Don Bruce was doing the hiring, and Don was a friend of mine. 4-5 years later, the tables turned a 180, Jamie Morgan actively pursued me to take it. My position was different, I turned him down flat, the money sucked. All of which, I admit without an ounce of reservation, is ancient history. And in the over all, it means nothing - it's just an old radio guy telling an old radio story. For all you youngsters(and I wish I was among you), that was a time when this market was owned by WARM and WILK, they were the big dogs, and then there was everyone else. Cheers!

What even happned to Don Bruce?

Drucker did nights at WSCR and then moved into the overnight slot at WARM for a few years. THen he made a move to WRAW in Reading, then wound up back at WBAX in 1971-72 being the Program director. I remember visiting him on Union Street shortly before the boys from 'BAX moved into their new building on Rt. 11. He was gone from WBAX shortly a little bit before the flood and I think entered the priesthood after that. I'm thinking he was ordained in 1977 or 1978. One of the few negative things he constantly complained about was that he wanted that photo from the survey sheet which was on the WARM wall after he quit for a keepsake and management wouldn't give it to him. Yeears later, he still talks about how they denied him that photo as a parting gift. I understand that he travels extensively to Turkey as part of his ministry. Great conversationalist, good guy.

There used to be a guy at WARM who did the news with Jerry Heller in the morning... I'm thinking his first name was Rod.... does anyone remember what his name was?

I'd go with Ray Magwyre or maybe Rod Raeger. Magwyre always did AM news, but I'm not sure what Raeger's schedule was when he decided to move along. Still love to know where Kelly Reed is...
