Tucson radio THAT boring

Why would the car makers want to spend the extra $5+ per radio on something most people really could care less about. They wouldn't spend the $2 several years ago to include CQAM stereo, why spend even more now.

And, why would any non-Clear Channel station want to pay their competition monthly fees each month for a technology that has yet to be really accepted? Most reviews have said the HD AM doesn't sound too great and switches in and out. HD FM: most listeners really can't tell the difference. So you get an HD-2 or HD-3 sub-channel which is mostly automated or duplicating an existing AM. Sell that to the public! A bad idea approved by an incompetent FCC!

If the XM/Sirius wasn't subsidizing the car companies we wouldn't have HD car radio options either. XM/Sirius is hoping you'll keep the subscription going after the free trial period. I'm sure there is something in it for GM/Ford/Chrysler and any others who decided to include the option.

Back to the original post that begins this--the first in a loooong time--relatively successful thread:

Young Turk said, "OK, I'm trying to get the lack of activity on this Tucson radio board. Is Tucson radio THAT bad..."

My answer, no, and yes. Boring is in the ears of the beholder. According to most posting here (which seem to be old timers not currently employed and/or engineers) the primary topics are AM stations (The Jolt seems to get a lot of mentions), nostalgia stations (we have a lot of those too, on AM of course), and posters who don't even know what the call letters or station names.

Sadly, the problem on this site is there are no "Young Turks" like yourself. At least they are not finding their way to radio-info.com's Tucson pages. Take a look at the posting dates and you'll see gaps of months at a time with no postings whatsoever. That is a shame.

Some stations do still have live jocks for mornings, mid days and afternoons. KLPX, KIIM, KMXZ, KGVY. These stations even still have live and local weekend jocks.
Others are live and local for 2 dayparts: KRQ afternoons and evenings; KGMG mid days and afternoons.
Others are live in one daypart: KTRH and KNST mornings. KFFN afternoons.
Then there are the out of town live (or delay) shows like John Jay & Rich on KRQ, Delilah on KMXZ.

It's not what it used to be and it's not what it could and should be. But there are still people putting on radio shows and trying to keep their dreams alive.

If 40 is old.. I'd hate to find out the age of "Young Turks"

Trying... but not so successful here... Groups are too scared to pay the money it takes to make life easy for whole staff, for fear that 35-45k/yr + benies would force them to shut down. Hell I have been back in the market and have yet to see more than 3 ads for any staff other than sales. (which is a revolving door)

If anybody feels like retiring I'm certain that you could have me as a utility player under market value.
Just for the pure joy of being back in Radio once more.

...any particular reason why you left out KXCI? We're local and live 23 hours every weekday (only exception being the Amy Goodman/Jim Hightower news block at noon) and our only out-of-town product on the weekends is the 30-minute "This Way Out" on Sunday afternoons (and that could very well be changing in the next few weeks, hint hint)...

104.1 might be doing well, but it's a very hate driven format with announcers that make terrible and derogatory statements

It's just plain garbage

Congratulations on creating a station that has such a toxic reputation in the community it attracts almost no advertisers. So what if it has ratings if you can't sell it. Another result of management who are asleep at the wheel. 104.1 will stall until it re-images and replaces its staff.

I heard the evening guy on hot the other night... wow so flat and bland the guy had no personality whatsoever... sounded like a guy who couldn't cut it on a NPR station.

HEY PD's What happened to personality driven radio?
In Tucson it's only in drive time the way it sounds.

Back when radio was still a form of entertainment, personality and presentation were everything. Now that the format/personality is secondary, it seems that advertising is the true format of every radio station below market 15.(an exaggeration to be sure) "Stationality" is something GMs(sales) don't understand which has created stations no one is compelled to listen to. If you want loyal listeners beyond the P1, you have to make them feel like they need to be a part of the "club" and not background noise.

The argument from those GMs would be that "it's a business first" of which there is no doubt. However, as the old saying goes; It takes money to make money.

If you go cheap on the talent, you get what you pay for and that seems to be "boring radio".....but those commercials sure do sound great! ;)
