Why would the car makers want to spend the extra $5+ per radio on something most people really could care less about. They wouldn't spend the $2 several years ago to include CQAM stereo, why spend even more now.
And, why would any non-Clear Channel station want to pay their competition monthly fees each month for a technology that has yet to be really accepted? Most reviews have said the HD AM doesn't sound too great and switches in and out. HD FM: most listeners really can't tell the difference. So you get an HD-2 or HD-3 sub-channel which is mostly automated or duplicating an existing AM. Sell that to the public! A bad idea approved by an incompetent FCC!
If the XM/Sirius wasn't subsidizing the car companies we wouldn't have HD car radio options either. XM/Sirius is hoping you'll keep the subscription going after the free trial period. I'm sure there is something in it for GM/Ford/Chrysler and any others who decided to include the option.
