Tulsa Radio

GQ, if you think this board's dead, take a gander at Missouri. Last 5 posts: June 27, May 22, March 24, Feb 21 and Dec 17. Does this tell the sad story of our once vigorous industry, or what?

Yeah. Even the employees (or now ex-employees) have given up on it, for the most part. Until the lake turns over and all the little bad fishies float to the top, we've got a bad lake still. Until regional and local owners that actually care about the stations they own get to buy at a reasonable price so they can afford to put something into the product of radio, the industry simply isn't worth working for. Several are setting it out and others are suffering along but the reality is most all radio employees are hoping for an improvement over what we have. It's not as much the economy as it's a bad product created by bad operators.

IMO, radio is dead unless the corporations are kept out.

Regards,

As with the stock market itself, the Wal-Mart McDs version of business today where money is foolishly spent then employees are cut or paid slave wages are what has caused the failure. Radio doesn't work well as a box store. It's a failure. The sooner the banks take the hit from their mistake in investing in these idiots and their pie in the sky ideas on what stations are worth, the better.

Earth to Crappy Channel, Crap-to-sell, Cumeless and other big boys: Your mulitmillion dollar stations aren't worth what you want for them or what you owe. GAME OVER.

Nothing particularly interesting has happened in Tulsa radio recently.

I was going to compliment 92.1 / The Beat and K-Hits for their Michael Jackson tributes the day he died (ESPECIALLY The Beat who went nearly an hour with all MJ tunes, had callers on the air & talked to an impersonator at 71st & Sheridan) but by the time I got back to the board it was old news.

I interviewed Cindy Morrison the day after she was let go from KTUL, but self-promotion amongst peers have never been something I found pleasurable, so I didn't mention it beforehand...

Chris Medlock is running for mayor, discuss... Don Imus is back in Tulsa, this time on 1270 / KRVT & 1570 / KZLI, discuss... Rumor mill has it two Tulsa FMs are for sale, discuss...

*YAWN*

I think when the next book comes out, the board will jump back to life. I'm VERY curious to see how 102.3 is doing.

I'm guessing there's not a enough people left in the business to get on here and talk about it very much. Those who are still in the business are doing the job of multiple people and don't have time to get on here. :)

Amen, sir. Btw, NightAire, thanks for the compliment ;-)

I'm sure KXTD AM isn't on most folks radar. But the local ownership of this station is doing far more that most in the market. New studios, new tower, complete revamping of the programming and air staff (and not with cuts, but additions). Hispanic Radio maybe the only thing not saddled with debt and moving forward in this market.

The station is also up 20% in revenue over 2008.

Is your sole purpose here to promote your station? I don't seem to remember any other posts from you that aren't lauding the heroic efforts of KXTD.

Oh come on Ion, let the guy have is day in the sun. Besides 20% growth on a dollar is $1.20. He can do him some math!!!!

Hey guys, ease up. KXTD is a scrappy, locally owned station in the Tulsa market. There are advertisers on Que Buena that I would love to have on my stations. From what I can tell, they are doing a hell of a job providing good local radio.

I'd listen to KXTD but I can't understand a word they're saying. Also, I think they're talking about me.

Which is great, and I have no problem with that. The more local radio, the better...and I especially think it's great that Tulsa has a locally-owned station that caters to the growing Hispanic population. I just don't understand who he/she is trying to convince here by plugging the station.

He's just lookin' for some love.

Apparently in all the wrong places?

Bryan, I'm pretty sure Que Buena isn't talking about you AND me... but the 85-tape series I just bought on learning Spanglish seems to bring the two of us up about every other tape. ;D

Ionosphere, he's just trying to get a head start on the radio people on here who won't be radio people next year because of further cutbacks, & might end up with diaries. ;)

I think the intent of the Que Buena post was not to tout their station, but to respond to previous posts which stated that things "were so bad that no one had time to post." Just thinkin'...

I don't have any new Tulsa radio news... maybe some nostalgia. I used to work at KAKC as a news reporter back in the mid 70s. Richard Dowdell was news director then, and I was known as "Kathy Chronister, KAKC Hotline News." I was on the air at the same time as Scooter Seagraves, Michael "Morning Mouth" McCarthy, Charlie Derek, Denver Fox, Gary "Ono" Stevens, Captain Fantastic, Johnny Rivers, and more. It was a hot time and the pretty much a last hoorah for AM music radio as FM was movin' in (KMOD was the 'cool' new FM station, and we all secrety listened to Kitty Roberts).

I live in Los Angeles now... as I have since shortly after leaving KAKC. I work in TV and film now and am returning to Tulsa this week with my first theatrical release, a controversial documentary called 'Bloodline' which investigates the idea of a marriage between Jesus and Mary Magdalene and a secret society called the Priory of Sion. It will be showing at the Circle Cinema Sunday evening (August 16), and I'll be there to chat and answer questions after the show.

I'm hoping to run into some of my old radio buddies and anyone I knew 'back in the day' and also look forward to making some new friends in Tulsa as well. Take care! René Barnett
