TV coverage of the shooting of President Trump, 7/13/2024

NBC's Dasha Burns had several coherent witnesses, but identified them only by first name. Six or seven of them. I've been a reporter forever (almost as long as David E's been in radio) and you get the first and last name, their age and hometown. Reuven Frank, twice NBC News president, would have been appalled. (In 1963, a witness to the JFK shooting was asked their home address on WBAP-TV, and gave it!) Otherwise NBC's coverage was stellar.

That witness in 1963 was the friend of Mary Moorman (The woman who took the famous still picture). Although WBAP (As far as I can remember) never really asked for her address, she did give it anyway in the phone interview she gave as being 9403 Bluff Creek (And NBC broadcast it nationally too!!)

You would NEVER see something like that today

FOX proper (not to be confused with Fox News Channel) was useless in some large & major markets. Their O&O here in the Detroit market ran the Twins - Giants baseball game uninterrupted - aside from scheduled commercial breaks - with zero mention of the assassination attempt. There were no news vignettes, no crawls, nothing! That baseball telecast began at 7PM ET. I was completely stunned by the lack of any news coverage.

I understand FOX O&O stations in some other markets, including Minneapolis and San Francisco, either went split screen or went exclusively with news coverage of the shooting (using a Fox News Channel feed). Atlanta, like Detroit, went with baseball nonstop from what I understand.
Problem is Fox News has no reliable Fox affiliate they can draw from as Sinclair-owned WPGH 53 is a newsless operation

We may not know all of the markets that ran news coverage until Monday afternoon. Fox was in a tough position, because they had an exclusive on this game, and they also had live events running on FS1 and FS2. So they couldn't move the baseball, and left it to affiliates to decide. Tough choice, since continuing coverage was commercial free, and the affiliates likely had paid spots for baseball. New York was easy since Fox owns both channel 5 and 9.
Here in Denver, Nexstar owns KWGN 2 (CW O&O) & KDVR 31 (Fox). My guess is they kept the game on KDVR (Since the game began at 5;00 PM) but had coverage of the assassination attempt on The CW via Newsnation (Since they own that network too) but since I wasn't watching, I can't verify that

The only TV station in Pittsburgh that's owned & operated by one of the networks is KDKA. The others are owned by Sinclair, Hearst, and Cox. None of the networks had crews on site. It was all local crews. Of course the minute this happened, the networks scrambled to get their top people on site. That takes time. So by Sunday, there are professional event crews on site. Even the reporters who normally cover Trump weren't there. They were in Milwaukee doing advance work for the convention that starts Monday.

This also goes for the security teams. Secret Service is responsible for the former president. The local police and security are responsible for the venue. So it's likely that the shooter slipped between the cracks. Today, everyone has access to the same weapons and the same clothing. It's hard to know the good guys from the bad guys when you have multiple security teams. That's just my speculation. We won't know for sure until the investigation is complete.
And when it comes to communications, I would assume NONE of the security teams had radio equipment which they could use to talk to each other too

As a Ham Radio operator, I think back to 2008 when Denver hosted the Democratic National Convention. We made it A POINT to make Ham Radio a focal point in communications because there was some concern that would be mass rioting in Downtown Denver as Barack Obama made his acceptance speech

While there was some rioting & there were some arrests, most were rushed onto public transportation & herded out of Downtown Denver. I myself was called down in case my services were need but was otherwise told to watch the street alongside my home QTH (I lived in a 7th floor apartment in a high rise apartment building on a major street) for any activity out of the ordinary

Thankfully nothing happened

I would hope Milwaukee area Hams did much the same thing during the Republicam National Convention last week

The fact Minneapolis and San Francisco made, in my eyes, the correct decision to cut to news coverage, means the decision should have not been that difficult in markets such as Detroit.

Minneapolis and San Francisco FOX have a co-owned station they can move stuff too. Detroit does not.
Philly, Atlanta, Detroit, Tampa, Milwaukee, Austin TX, and Gainsville, Florida have a FOX O&O but no other station they can move programming to
Fox owns WJBK 2 in Detroit too

Morning Joe was upset about missing Monday's show:

id be upset too. treat me like an adult and tell me what you don't want me to say. Thats what PDs, NDs, GMs do...... theyd been in breaking news mode for over 24 hours.. probably been beating the story to a pulp and at this point, morning joe felt discussion of the event in general terms and other news was a better idea than continued ad nauseum discussion of this event.

Someones trying to kiss but or attract a certain audience by doing what MSNBC did (and no, im not pro trump
I thought it was weird to see a simucast of NBC News Now on MSNBC rather than Joe & the gang

I posted the stations that only have a Fox O&O in my post twice now. Yes Austin is part of that group (Fox O&O with no sister station)

I didn't see that list till just a few minutes ago & I could only think of Austin in my reply

Apparently local Palm Beach News outlets are reporting of another Trump Assassination attempt. This is outright rare to hear former presidents get targeted for assassination attempts. Yes this is under investigation and so far multiple Palm Beach News outlets are getting updates from area law enforcement.

In regards to how the broadcast nets handled it, can't tell you about NBC, but CBS occupied with NFL had a scroll on the bottom of the screen relaying the news during the 4th quarter of the early games & in the late DH game, they had a 30-second special report that took the place of a network and/or NFL ad post-halftime report. ABC had a special report after the Premier Lacrosse League championship. Nothing from FOX.

Here is more and there is a claim that the accused was contacting reporters about his plans to help in Ukraine.

Routh spoke with CBS News about his Ukraine ambitions

CBS News senior foreign correspondent Holly Williams immediately recognized Routh's name when she woke up in London on Monday to the news of his arrest. She'd been in contact with him for more than a year in the early stages of the war in Ukraine, which she's covered extensively.

It was one of the fliers he helped post around Kyiv, offering to help other foreigners get deployed with Ukrainian battalions, that initially caught Williams' eye and prompted her to get in touch with him.
