TV Land or No TV Land

It is a shame what changes are being made on TV Land. The slaughter of a network is a ugly thing. They are taken the network programing moving it around almost hourly. I believe in just weeks TV Land will be history. The change will be like TNN transposed to Spike TV. The new promos having grandpa his son and granson on the couch with grandpa being the fallguy is a sure sign of big changes. The special programs they have ordered mention on a previous posting add to my suspicions.

Any thoughts?

TNN changed to "The National Network" and then "Spike TV" because the old country was, according to Viacom, redundant with CMT. There is no network they have to use that excuse again. Nick at Nite isn't full time, TV Land was an attempt to MAKE IT full time. Viacom sees no benefits from ION. So what excuse does Viacom have? What makes it think this could work?

Within three months TV Land will have at least a different logo.

A new logo a new image and new programing. I still believe a new name.

I believe your correct and that we both see the deer in the headlights but can we stop in time!

When TV land was launched in the mid-90's, they offered programming that we had not seen in many years. "Hogan's Heroes", "Sgt Bilko", 50 and 60's crime shows come to mind. I think they hit their stride offering theme weekends like a full weekend of the show "Emergency" or "Love American Style". I was pleased to see some great programming that I never saw as it came out before I was born. Some other shows that come to mind are Burke's Law and Honey West. "The FBI" would be a good show to recycle along with "Man from Uncle". I believe they started going downhill when they started airing new programming from the late 80's and early 90's (like Roseanne). To me the network should look at the almost 60 year history of TV programming and offer shows to new generations. Even the old commercials were great to remember.

Why do they not go back to that formula of offering these series again every so many years. That way we don't get burned out on them. Disney learned a great lesson with their movie catalog. They felt that if they retire a movie for about 7 years, a new generation would get to see it and view as if it was new. TV Land could to the same thing with some of the old series. That way we would not get burned out on the same old shows.

I noticed now that Nick at Nite is showing promos from Bob Saget's beginning run on America's Funniest Home Videos from the early 90's that is going to premiere next week. I guess that The Olsen Twins had something to do with that. In case you were wondering, The Olsens guested several times on Bob's show during their tenure on Full House.

What's next? Two Of A Kind? That was their flop show that ABC Family has aired endlessly in reruns even though it lasted a season.

The whole network is screwed up.
The PD of that is on drugs, apparently.

The other night their movie of the week was Fatal Attraction.

Before, it was White Men Can't Jump.

What in Hades do movies, let alone films from the 80s and 90s - have to do with supposed classic TV?

Tonight they're showing Weekend at Bernie's again. Sometimes I get the impression that TV Land may be becoming the reincarnation of The National Network, even if they don't change the name.

I remember when TV Land launched. On its launch date, they aired Mannix, The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour, The Addams Family (more frequently), Mission: Impossible, Mister Ed, and many others. I also loved their "Retromericals", the commercials of yesteryear that they'd air in lieu of actual commercials.

As I posted elsewhere here on the board, it seems like niche networks eventually leave their niche due to no-nothing suits who claim that they're trying to "broaden the horizons" of the channel (witness what SCI FI has devolved to thanks to the clueless Bonnie Hammer - *wrestling* on SCI FI, Bonnie? Are you high?).

I don't know if TV Land will change formats, but they might just change the name and logo. Thoughts?

From what I noticed, when TV Land gets a show, they run it for a few weeks, and then it is gone or it is relegated to early mornings. Remember how much hype Star Trek got on TV Land before its premiere and then when they showed it they showed in the early evening hour a few weeks and then they shuffled it into nowhere. If they run a marathon like That Girl, then they never show it again after that and That Girl was also in the original lineup back in 1996 when it premiered.

I thought that movies like Weekend At Bernie's and Fatal Attraction belonged on Spike not TV Land. I guess you can say R.I.P to not only TV Land but to Nick at Nite. (a.k.a. The Full House/Roseanne/Fresh Prince/Bob Saget and the Olsen Twins network)

Personally, it's gotten to a point where the name of the channel no longer reflect the programs they show -- these days, all of them want to be like USA or TBS.

And since the programs they show can be easily found elsewhere on the dial (maybe not immediately, but soon afterward), it's not worth the hefty cable bill.

I'm hoping the wave of the future will be like from AOL tv. I found the site and they have a lot of the old shows, not the entire series, like "Alice," and "Gilliagan's Island" (including the original pilot) and the Looney Toons. The gimick is you can play them via the Internet in good quality or pay (I think it's $1.99) to see the shows in DVD quality.

Yeah I miss the old days of USA "Up All Night," but that has gone the way of vinyl records and anthology shows. I think there is a market, as I've said before, I listen to a LOT of old time radio shows, and when I play them at work, while I'm working all the young kids come into my office and just listen. So they are still good entertainment, but kids I guess thrive on more. Because while they certainly enjoy listening to the OTR with me, they never would go out and check out any of the tapes from the library. Thank goodness I live in Chicago and the libraries have HUGE selections.

I guess in many way this change is the same, as I find these OTR shows like "Amos and Andy," "Mr and Mrs North," "Jack Benny," and "Our Miss Brooks," far cleverer than any TV show that ever aired. So I guess it's the same thing, just as Old Time Radio disappeared, the good old days of Nick At Nite are gone forever too.

This may be a good time for the "Retro Television Network" to launch a cable
service to go against whatever "TV Land" may become.

rtn-retro tv network, are they about to show programs like mission impossible, hogan's hereos and what are the other programs they will be programming. i read they will be getting programs from the cbs library. hopefully they will be good programs and also keep up the lineup of good shows for along time. tv land we got after a couple of years when it premiered and it was about to go sour. i rembered they repeated the same episode of emergency, swat, not many episodes of wkrp in cincinatti.

I think Nick@Nite is doing the SAME thing. They just added AMERICAS FUNNIEST HOME VIDEOS... wtf?

Yes, The Olsen Twins network strikes again with another one of their shows. They were guests on that show while they were on Full House appearing in several episodes. I guess before long they'll be showing Two Of A Kind on Nick at Nite.

Speaking of Fresh Prince, get this, TBS returns that show in the afternoons starting this week. Ooh boy!! ::) ::)

I wonder why they have to show Full House, Fresh Prince, Roseanne, America's Funniest Home Videos (early 90's version), Home Improvement (soon to be on Nick at Nite), etc. where they have shown every episode at least 500 times on either Nick at Nite, WGN, TBS, ABC Family, syndicated local reruns, etc. Isn't there a cutoff date where they can give these shows a rest and I do mean a REST?

Gee,..Full House, Fresh Prince, Americas Funniest Home Videos?..can we assume that "Blossom" can't be far behind?

Yes Nick@Nite is disgusting to watch anymore. Everytime I tune in it's either Fresh Priince, mostly, or Rosanne or Full house the entire network is running on these 4 shows. I remember growing up and tuning in to watch Car 54, Laugh_In, Donna Reed, Ann Sothern, for a while they ran the old episodes of SNL and SCTV..it seemed as if every fall they would progress a few years in there programming ..they started in the 50's and worked there way upionto the late 60's and 70's....next thing I knew they were showing programs that weren't even off the air 10 years.

Tv Land was one of my favorite channels a few years back....they ran classic shows that i used to watch on N@N plus shows that I watched as a kid but hadn't seen in a few years such as MacGyver, and the fall guy..I also recall Night court on there rotation last summer which I thouroghly enjoyed however,, like msot netowrks who pick up the NC franchise..it doesn't last long. HOWEVER, THE THING I AM SICK OF THE MOST ARE THOSE FRIGGIN WESTERNS...MY GOD HOW MANY TIMES CAN WE SEE THE SAME EPISZODES OF BONANZA AND GUNSMOKE....WHO REALLY CARES ABOUT THESE 2 SHOWS..BUT EVERY WEEKEND THEY HAVE A MARATHON OF THESE 2 SHOWS AND THEN EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE THEY WILL RUN MAVERICK OR WHATHEVER NEW SHOW THEY ARE PROMO-ING FOR THERE LINEUP.

I miss the TVLAnd time capsule..ran in 2003? Where they would take a week and show a block of programming from a particular week and year...was a good time recalling shows like ALf, Amazing stories, Lacelot Link secret Chimp!

However, those days are gone!

What's wrong with "Blossom"?

Last I checked, that show is not all over the place in syndication like the other titles mentioned. Which is the reason for the complaints. And rightfully so.

I've brought this post out of mothballs because it looks like local over-the-air stations are once again the place "tv classics" we once turned to Nick-At-Night and TV Land for. Examples -- here's the upcoming "Summer of Fun" line-up for KDOC in L.A. :

7pm The Wild Wild West
8pm Saved by the Bell
8:30 The Brady Bunch
9pm The Partridge Family
9:30 Bewitched
10pm I Dream of Jeannie
10:30 The Honeymooners
11pm The Twlight Zone
11:30 Night Gallery

I'm not sure when the "Summer of Me" over in Chicagoland begins, but at the moment, I see their prime-time line-up includes The Jeffersons and Sanford and Son, two more shows TV Land is scheduling less of these days except for the graveyard shift.
I'm sure they're are many more examples around the country as markets realize enough people are looking to escasp the "reality" of Reality TV.
