TV-Related Predictions for 2020

Electric Company won't happen. They already did a short lived revival about 10 years ago, and it disappeared as soon as it aired.

I could see CBS bringing back TPIR $1,000,000 shows. How about in the summer? If Beat Shazam gets the season 4 it deserves...it would give Jamie Foxx some competition in the world of big money in primetime.

Which leads to another prediction:
NBC airs another season of The Wall, while Fox cancels Spin the Wheel. As much as I *KNOW* the ending is scripted as hell, The Wall is the better show of the two. And I think NBC had several unaired season 3 episodes ready to go, yet they were not shown in 2019.

If they didn’t air the new season, there’s a decent shot it ain’t coming back. In any case, it’s an indication they’re not that enamored of it when they had new episodes and plugged in reruns as time filler.

I wonder if it had to do with Chris Hardwick's sexual harassment case that was later thrown out. Reruns this past summer did decent in the ratings.

One non-TV prediction: Filipino fast-food giant Jollibee will open its first location in Tennessee, either in Memphis or Nashville (how many Filipinos live in those two cities?).

Doesn't matter. If the food looks interesting and the chain does a lot of promotion, people will drop in and give it a try. I'd be surprised if the number of Thais in my city of 55,000 and the neighboring town of 40,000 combined is even in the low triple digits, but that hasn't stopped the proliferation of Thai restaurants in the past two decades. We don't have many from the Asian subcontinent either, yet Indian restaurants are doing well, too.

On the other hand, we have a large Hispanic population, largely from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, yet restaurants featuring mofongo, pollo asada and other specialties of the Caribbean's former Spanish possessions haven't been able to break out of the Hispanic sections of the city. One (El Rey del Pollo) tried to expand to the local mall's food court. Few non-Hispanic shoppers gave it even a second look and it quickly disappeared.

I've looked at Jollibee's menu and I'd certainly put it to the taste test if the chain ever decides to tackle Connecticut. Maybe success in Tennessee (although our demographics are completely different) will encourage expansion to even less likely areas like New England.

Update on previous post: Jamie and Corinne are back for season 4!! Game Show Casting facebook already up with audition notice for 2020 season. There's a slim chance someone from WA state may be applying soon. ;-)

As Mentioned in other places Youtube will have to confront the issue of artist/label/recording industry contract disputes. Originally I mentioned this on the audio apps side but I will mention it here.

The "team" playing football in the Northeast will have yet another major
cheating scandal. The scandal will be irrefutable. The NFL will take swift
and decisive action. NFL ratings, nationwide, will skyrocket as the "team"
loses both it's quarterback and head coach. TV ratings in a small area
of the Northeast will plummet.

I agree on Brady--I wouldn't be surprised if scandal or not, he retires in 2020.

Same with Aaron Rodgers.

I mean to predict in my original post that either Rodgers and/or Brady will announce their retirement in the coming year.

Didn't ABC renew all of their summer game shows? I'm not sure if a Hollywood Squares revival would fit in there, or even the Supermarket Sweep project with Leslie Jones.

I'll add another prediction, albeit local to me:
Yakima becomes the next U.S. city with no local news department, as Sinclair shuts down KIMA's news department, sells the studios to developers, and combines the newscast at KEPR Pasco. (Like the ABC/NBC affiliates here)
I hate to say it but KIMA is a very tired operation. Half of their news is Sinclair must runs, stuff from KOMO, health reports from 2000 miles away, the weekly 'Spotlight on America' and weather forecasts that are fed from KEPR. And even then morning/weekend/11pm is ran by KEPR. It's only 5/6pm that come from Yakima.

That is a good prediction. (200 miles, not 2,000 though). I would take it further. I think all the Tri/Yak local news may eventually go away and the market will become a part of an expanded Spokane viewing area. I bet there have been discussions about this within Cowles, Morgan Murphy, and Sinclair. Perhaps won't happen in 2020, but may eventually. Hopefully, I am wrong.

Markets are defined by Nielsen, not station owners. While owners may ask for a redefinition, the final decision is made by Nielsen and is in accordance with actual measured viewing.

Another complication would be the existing network DMA exclusivity agreements.

But can't owners that own properties in both markets (Spokane and Tri-Cities/Yakima) just simulcast their product? That is what I was getting at. BTW, Cowles already does this randomly. Like tonight, we are seeing Fox Spokane at 10pm, instead of the usual KNDU Fox 'cast.

Little late to the party here. Sorry 'bout that.

1) The big news of 2020 will be an app or some sort of way to watch local OTA channels while streaming without having to pay. Like OTA, it will be geo-fenced (meaning you can't watch KCRA out of Sacramento when you visit family in Western Washington, you'd be streaming KING5 from Seattle.)
2) Franken-FM loophole will be closed. However, I think it'll be a partial victory for Franken-FM operators and other potential operators as the FCC will 'open up' 87.7-87.9 for AM revitalization stations in places where there would be no interference to a digital RF channel 6 operation...probably around 2022 or so.
3) Traditional OTA and cable watching will continue to see downward growth. Some of the OTAs with robust streaming options may start to see an uptick in viewing
4) Because of #3, the streaming wars will continue. Prices to get similar amounts of content will be close to what cable would cost the average consumer...minus all those channels nobody watches. Don't be surprised if a couple of semi-major standalone streaming platforms go under or get absorbed into Netflix/Hulu/Disney+/Amazon/YouTube

Not likely. Many, if not most, TV stations would turn unprofitable if they were denied the carriage fees they get now from the traditional distribution systems.

OTOH, it is possible that local media will find a way to offer a channel lineup of signals for a very affordable price. Many people would gladly forgo some of the high priced cable channels (ESPN alone was reportedly abut $9 of my cable bill before I got a "slim bundle" that eliminated over $30 a month I was paying for a group of over-priced sports channels).

But local stations, particularly in medium and small markets, can't survive without the carriage fees or an equivalent.

That sounds like a definite possibility, with existing stations receiving some kind of priority in getting those new channels.

And cable companies will have to expand streaming "mobile" apps as well as expanding the ability to buy tiers of channels, eliminating restrictions on how each subscriber configures their channel line-up.

I agree that there are a lot of channels that get carried... and get fees... because they are bundled by their providers, with Viacom being a case in point of a provider with some must-have channels which require the carriage of less interesting options.

Consumers really want a channel by channel selection option, where channels of no interest can be skipped. I found myself paying for many channels, about 50% of which I never watched nor would watch.

It's like going to the market to buy a nice snapper filet and being told you have to take some squid, catfish and mussels too in order to get the snapper.

Umm but hearst television is on the Newson App how will they prevent me from watching KSBW-TV or KCRA-TV or any hearst owned station from geofencing. All they do is put national ads between segments though and its meant for national access. Also isn't collecting data from IP addresses a huge thing for outlets like Newson and Youtube as their way of making money.

So I guess it will be by the DMA? So if I'm here in Ellensburg or even up in Cle Elum, I'm still stuck streaming Tri-Cities stations? (OK...KNDO *Yakima* but outside a few local ads you can't tell the difference). Yet I can get KOMO and KING on partial syndexed feeds on cable here. Much better looking programming IMO. As much as KING gets a lot of negative comments, I'd take them over KIMA's crappy news where half of it isn't even Yakima/Ellensburg related. I don't care about Kristine Frazao. Much less James Rosen. Leave that crap to pundit shows and the network evening news. The KOMO stories should also be lessened too, but I'd take them over the punditry from Sinclair correspondents. Love this recent KIMA facebook comment: 'Got any LOCAL stories on here? Good grief!!'

I'll take the calamari and catfish off your hands!

Right now my streaming bill is less than $200 a year -- ESPN+, MLB TV and MiLB TV (minor league baseball) are all I pay for. Cut the cable cord about 10 years ago, can find all the other programming I need elsewhere online, mainly by bumming off a family member's YouTube TV subscription. Pluto TV has some interesting stuff too, especially in the news and vintage TV categories. I wonder how long it can remain a free service, though. It seems determined to let advertising pay the bills. Seems unlikely that's enough, especially since it includes an array of music channels.
