UCLA signs with KABC (!)

It's too bad that KEIB won't grab up the available KRKD call letters The two standalone towers with KRKD emblazoned on both, are still standing downtown due to historical preservation. Why not capitalize on that and bring back some SoCal radio history.

Because, 4½ years after his death, the station is still inexplicably named after Rush Limbaugh.

And if you think iHeart cares even for one second about 1150's history, I have a bridge to sell you.

Actually, KABC has a better signal in San Diego than KEIB.

While I've had few problems receiving KABC in the past when I visited my mom's sister in Carlsbad, the signal has always become problematic the closer I got to San Diego due to the Tijuana station at 800 kHz. Has the 800 kHz station disappeared or do you have a good DX receiver and directional antenna where you can filter out the Tijuana station in order to hear KABC clearly.

For listeners to AM 1150, yes.

To anyone else under the age of 70, the association is a liability (e.g., "AM 1150 the WHAT?")

To anyone under the age of 30, it's "Rush who?"

The world forgot Charles Coughlin. And it won't be too many years and the majority of adults won't ever know who Rush Limbaugh ever was.
Myself, I had never heard of Charles Coughlin, until I googled the name just now. So, good point about Rush being completely forgotten by future generations, as Coughlin is now.

I have a very good (reception-wise) Sony portable. I'm about 20 miles from the border, and yes KABC gets a little interference from 800 AM, still broadcasting from Tijuana. However, 800's signal is fairly weak at my location. I believe they lowered power a few years ago. Back when 800 ran English-language ESPN Radio 24/7, they raised power to I think 1kw. But when 800 returned to Spanish-lauguage programming, the signal-level dropped. Maybe they didn't feel the need to run 1kw anymore if they were going back to serving just Tijuana.

Along those lines: who remembers the once-notorious radio (and TV) demagogue Joe Pyne? He pioneered confrontational interviews, way before anyone had heard of Rush. Today... Joe who???

What percentage of Southern Californians today would know who Wally George was or even former mayor Sam Yorty?

(raises hand)

Everyone who ever watched KDOC/56 before it was sold and went religious remembers Wally.

Yorty was also on TV locally, on KCOP/13 for about five years after Tom Bradley defeated him in the mayoral race of 1973. (He was also a state Assemblyman and Congressman, before I was born.)

Yep, another one I had never heard of (Thankfully!). I believe my life is better for not ever having seen or heard Joe Pyne.

Although, I would have loved to have seen this exchange between Frank Zappa and Pyne:

One of the only things considered taboo was talking about Pyne's wooden leg. Pyne is reported to have said something like ...I guess your long hair makes you a woman..., to which it is claimed that Zappa responded ...so I guess your wooden leg makes you a table.

Mister, we could use a man like Wally George again.

Ah yes, Mayor Sam "Loss-Ang-gless" Yorty!

I must say, not knowing about some of these radio and TV people discussed here, that were before my time, makes me feel like a youngster around here....and I'm 62!
But isn't that true anywhere, and in any generation?

What motivation would most modern kids have for knowing the history of the broadcast media? They're all into streaming and podcasting. "Radio" (and to a lesser extent "linear television") is what their parents use to catch up on the news, or listen to sports PBP, or hear musical entertainment-of-last-resort when they're stuck in a car.

Unconfirmed, but very likely.

UCLA announced a switch from Learfield to JMI Sports as radio rights grantor during football season last year. It seems like JMI valued being the premier property on KABC instead of being second/third fiddle on KLAC.

JMI is much smaller than Learfield, but it has signed some schools with big athletics brands ... Notre Dame, Georgia, Kentucky and now UCLA.
Maybe a lot has changed but last I heard college athletic programs get paid for the broadcasting rights, not the other way around.
