Uggh! Cousin Brucie!

Michael Nesmith in the morning? Now THAT'S a morning show I'd listen to in a hearbeat! ;D

Save your breath. This is not an oldies station like it was. Oldies will be eighties and pop. Shannon and others will return but it will not be the 101 like you remember twenty years ago. It has to move forward to find a new audience.

We won't know for certain until Thursday, but CBS-FM's press release (exerpt in quote box) seems to indicate a "65-89" approach, which might be interpreted as hits from the 70's mixed with compatible songs from the 60's and 80's.

Radio & Records said:
The re-launched format will feature songs from the Beatles, Motown and the Beach Boys, and continuing through the late `80s, with songs from artists such as Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Earth Wind & Fire, Rod Stewart, the Bee Gees, Chicago, Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Frankie Valli, and John Mellencamp, among many others.

Sure, a lot will depend on the approach and energy level, but I don't hear this station sounding like an AC or a background station. Granted, there likely won't be "bells, whistles and gongs" but it's sure to be uptempo and energized with a "fun" feel to it... wouldn't you think?

I'll stand by my contention: If the "new" CBS-FM is going to have a pulse, Armstrong would be a great fit.

From What I seen Online I wouldn't expect to See Harry Harrison Back, He is Retired and I think He'll stay that way.

I DO wonder is WILL THEY BRING BACK THE ECHO CHAMBER STUDIO SOUND? That was a unique "feature" of CBS-FM.

I can't believe those of you that are dissing Cousin Brucie. As someone said, show a little respect for the man, even if you're not from the NY/NJ area. He may seem like a washed-up, has been, but I remember him as far back as when I was 10 years old and he was on WABC. He was larger than life and he was great. I was fortunate enough to have just seen him in May at PBS annual DOO-WOPP fund raiser In Elizabeth, NJ. It really was a wonderful event and the Cuz made an un-anticipated appearance. He looks, sounds totally the same as he did 20 years ago. Don't ask me who but there were some other WCBS former "dignitaries" there. I recall Bruceie "hinting" that something may be in the works for CBS and not to give up hope. Well..lo and behold here we are 2 months later. :)

And FYI, The median age for the audience at that event was 30-50 range. I didn't see a wheelchair in the house.

"Hasn't picked a hit in 30 years"? It's been at least that long since the business in general has worked that way. NOW whose wear bars are showing? No matter what folks in other parts of the country might think, LOTS of New Yorkers still love Brucie -- the ones who grew up listening to him on WABC, and his appeal is universal enough for Sirius to sign him for 3 years!

Good thing those who used to be in charge of CBS-FM aren't still making decisions on Morning Shows or your idea might be on the air next week.

:D

Actually, given his post-Monkees career, Michael Nesmith in the morning sounds more like XM/Sirius stuff par excellence--which I guess is the point behind that post. He's *beyond* CBS-FM.

Of course, to a philistine like Oldies Cat, "beyond" = "beneath"...

Nesmith might have been a bad comparrison on my part. He was easily the most talented and innovative of the Monkees. Though, it probably should also be said he'd have zero-to-no interest in doing a daily morning show. But a gifted guy, absolutely.

;D

Just to put it in perspective, during most of the day, the top 4 or 5 stations in NY have more listeners just in their coverage area than XM has in the entire US. XM is hardly a gold standard to be compared against.

When I cancelled my XM service, this week, due to crappy coverage, I was offered, near the end of the conversation, up to a year free and a new radio. Of course, if there is no signal, neither of these is useful ao I declined.

It's the tone in David's posts that have gained my respect. he can say the same thing as others but without the arrogance and sarcasm.

Doesn't anybody on this board have any respect for talent and heritage ? If you work in this business and you advocate not bringing back the jocks that MADE this format then I can only hope to be the GM who lets you go when you become too old.
Well-stated. There are far too many on this board who ruthlessly advocate canning anyone.

Like the expert - DavidE - who so vocally defended CBS-FM's stabbing Cousin Brucie in the back.

Would be good for arrogant posters such as those to get a little taste of what they pull out of theri butts in their heartless posts.

i don't think they don't bring him back. he is totally annoying. did a great bit part in diry dancing...but other than that fuigethaboutit brucie. colect your 401 ks and drive your nice care you may have been the thing in the 60's 70's but retirment is cool too. i am 47 and can't wait until i can jump out abnd take the cash. some people let ego get too much in the way of reality.

That's happened with many satellite subscribers. Plus, the formats, while they may seem to be teeming with variety, are IMHO pretty wattered down.

I did no such thing. In fact, I never metioned Morrow specifically. However, if announncers do not appeal to the desired target demo olf any station, they need to move on to another station or out of radio. Note that I did not say that a talent has to be the same age as the demo, just that they must appeal to the demo. And that is a fact.

You have to stopo putting words in people's mouths that they did not say. It's rude, it's dishonest and it is not ethical.

Just to put it in perspective, if such logic were applied to art, this would be a gold standard to be compared against.
