Ugly TV station logos

Yeah, many of those are "creepy", perhaps a better word would be "cheesy". I would argue that this clip also showed atleast a couple of classics, "Screen Gems", and "WGBH Boston".

I agree, going back and watching, it was kinda sad. I miss them.

I do not recognize that music. Seems like a drum intro for some rock band, but can't place it.

One interesting example of news intros in the 70's was Mason Williams "Classical Gas", used in Seattle at KIRO and in Minneapolis, (I think KMSP, then ABC, but could be wrong, in circa 1976, and likely in many other markets).

Here is the theme...you have to go in a minute or so to get the actual theme...

Did KIRO and the Twin Cities station use a synthesizer version of "Classical Gas"? WBAL Baltimore did (and I thank my stays at my great aunt and great uncle [RIP both] in Anne Arundel County in that era for putting that intro in my mind).

That WBAL version sounds different from what I remember on KIRO Seattle. So my best guess is KIRO ran original Mason Williams sound, I assume with his permission. But I'm not 100% certain on this.

OK, since the Screen Gems 60's logo came up in the discussion, here is the KCRG TV 9 logo I remember (from the Matthew Sitell.com page http://www.matthewsittel.com/logos/kcrg0974.jpg )

Nothing really very wrong with either logo, other than the "9" logo looked similar to Screen Gems' and I never figured out how a "9"was supposed to represent Screen Gems.

(By the way, the KCRG 9 logo from 1965 predates the Screen Gems logo by at least a year or so)

I'm a little late on this, but sometimes to me the logos themselves weren't as scary or cheesy as the loud flourish of orchestra or synthesizer music that went with them. Some of the 70's and 80's synthesizer stuff really sounds terrible now.

Pittsburgh's WTAE also did the WBAL Classical Gas thing too. No surprise there since both stations were/are part of Hearst. Not for a news open but Harrisonburg, VA's WVPT ( PBS ) I can remember using Classical gas during the day in between those classroom shows. WVPT I seem to recall also used "Love's Theme" by the Love Unlimited Orchestra as well. The latter was used by Washington's WRC-TV for the ending of the old "NewsCenter 4" back in the 70s. At the time the rumor was that music was picked by WRC news anchor Jim Vance since he was a big fan of that tune.

I forgot about this one until I recently found it again. This is the first logo from 1978 for WPTY (Now WATN) 24 in Memphis:

To me this is the worst ever in Memphis!:p

This could be one of the worst anywhere! Is that a 21, a 24 or a 2-KNIFE? "WPTY, our movies are sliced and diced real nice with 2-KNIFE! Never needs sharpening, and quite handy in bad areas of town!"

ABC used "Love's Theme" to open it's golf coverage from the late '70s until a couple of years into the Cap Cities ownership, even keeping it for a couple of years after Roone Arledge's duties were reduced to heading the news division. I always looked forward to hearing "Love's Theme" when tuning in to the U.S. Open. Hope Roone's apologized to Barry White up there. :)

I'm guessing that Barry got a nice little check each year from all of the performances of Love's Theme on TV. But someone better versed in music rights for TV should weigh in here. I'd agree on Love's Theme...one of the best instrumentals ever, as good or maybe even better than Theme from "A Summer Place".

In the late 70's WMC NBC 5 in Memphis used Isaac Hayes's Theme from Shaft for their news theme, probably because he was from the Memphis area.

Another ugly logo. Denver's KMGH from 1975. Click on the image for a bigger pic.

The early 70s logo when the station was still known as KLZ was actually better.

That's certainly interesting. In the late 70s they had a triangle-7, which was an unusual departure from the sorts of logo shapes often used.

I wasn't aware of this song and thought it was the theme from "The Love Boat", which was on during those years. When I was in high school, once a week we had reading period. Regardless of what class we were supposed to be in, we were to sit and read for an hour. And the local beautiful music station was played over the speakers. One guy who played on the school's golf team said something like, "That's the theme from golf."

To wake up my thread and drift off-topic a bit, here's a logo that seems unique for a FOX station, WALA-TV Mobile AL And not at all ugly, either.
