UNCONFIRMED: Ed Brantley OUT at WIVK

Well, we have people on this board who claim to be sitting at the right hand of Mr. Pirkle as he plans this great new format for 100.3, but then they backtrack. The closest to actual evididence is the announcement yesterday on the Phil Williams show about a very important "to the nth degree" announcement coming at 9am Monday (you can hear it in the podcast, 4:30-4:45 segment). Otherwise, you can Google all day and find not even the slightest speculation by anyone about a change, other than here. The last thing anyone said about Citadel and the Pirkles was when Oak Ridge filed the objection to the bankruptcy in May. My understanding is the Pirkles got their money.

I'm still questioning that the Pirkles actually have a format ready to debut at 10am Monday. Apparently they've built studios in a super-secret location, and hired sales and programming staff entirely through blind box ads. Yes, you can run a format or stunt loop on a PC.

What about the possibility of South Central taking the 94.3 format to 100.3. The Pirkles could then LMA 94.3 to someone like K-Love (that's real good LMA money; just ask Vern Baldwin in Ohio.

I will LMAO if the 100.3 ends up being leased to Moody or some other all preacher show network. Or the "big announcement" is a contest and everything stays teh same. I'm sure our "insiders" will check in, once they stop stalking the Pirkles.

Does anyone know if there is actually any validity to any of this speculation about 100.3? Other than here on the radio info boards, there is zero talk about anything happening. Surely, if a change was actually going to occur, someone would get a scoop and be talking about it (News Sentinel, TV stations, etc. )

Anyway, if it does actually happen, it'll be funny to watch the right wingers go bonkers. You know they'll claim it's a liberal conspiracy to get WNOX's conservative talkers on a less powerful signal :D

But I still am not convinced that anything will actually take place since there is no coverage or investigating being done by anyone else. Does anyone actually have any concrete evidence that a change will occur? I still think Citadel would be smart to pony up any money Pirkle asks for to keep 'NOX as is.

The local media hasn't said anything about the claim filed against Citadel regarding the money owed Oak Ridge so why would they be all over this all of a sudden?

And where in the past have the reported on any actual changes happening in the local media before they happened? It's an "I'll scrub your back if you scub my back" deal.

Tuesday morning it will be everywhere and we'll all know the actual deal. Maybe.

Tell you what. Buy me lunch and I'll show you the super secret spy photos.

Citadel Communications (operator of WIVK, NewsTalk, Sports Animal and WOKI True Oldies) has declined to renew its lease agreement for 100.3 FM (the present home of NewsTalk).

From July 9 until August 1st they will simulcast the NewsTalk format on 100.3 FM and 98.7 FM (where they are presently programming WOKI True Oldies).

On August 2nd 100.3 FM will no longer be operated by Citadel and their NewsTalk programming will be available only on 98.7 FM. We are waiting for an announcement regarding who will operate 100.3FM and the nature of that programming beginning August 2nd.

Hey MurvleJumpUp... If you're an ambitious bartender working at Cherokee, then you have the inside track and probably know more than JPJr!

I would imagine that, if true, during that period, they would also transfer the WOKI calls back to the 100.3 frequency, per what were supposedly the terms of the LMA extension from 2005, and move the WNOX calls to 98.7.

Again, if that's true.

It is my understanding that the Pirkle family had, in the last week or two, reached an agreement on a new LMA for 100.3 I had assumed, apparently wrongly, that it was with Citadel. That came from someone out of the market, so them may have assumed wrongly as well. Oak Ridge FM received a payment as part of the final bankruptcy.

Hey Murvie, can you source the article? Thanks!

A quick Google search turned up a few results. The top result was All Access.

Do your legwork people!

Time to make more predictions:

Ed will become Tim Burchett's campaign manager. He will single-handedly solve all of the county's problems through the power of his charisma. Then he will win the lottery. Then he'll say a kind 'thanks, but no thanks' to all of the people that want to pay him half of what he's worth for him to make them the dominant number one station two days after he walks in the door.

Howard Stern will rent 100.3 from Johnny because he's tired of saying the f-word and having nobody to yell at when they miss bleeping one of them. Stern will count it as a business expense to reduce the taxes due from the brazillion space dollars he receives.

Citadel will give HHH a megaphone. Or put him on 98.7. Same difference. He will change his name to Hollerin' Hilton Hill.

Tennessee Cowboy will find a way to make money off of random speculation. He already knows seven pages of things that won't work, just from reading these posts. That narrows it down a little.

I saw the Pirkles with their mascot, Lewis Cosboy, in the Walker Springs WalMart tonight.

They had a cart loaded down with the entire "Now That's What I Call Music" set.

No, I'm not kidding. I couldn't believe it myself. I wish I could post a pic, because I captured one
on my cell phone camera but the board's code doesn't allow for that.

I thought the "legend" was WIVK has been #1 since 1970 with the exception of one book in 1972 when WNOX was on top. Please note I said "legend." I was not around then so I'm not claiming this is truth.

The relative inconsistancy with which WIVK AM and FM simulcast dayparts during the 70s has something to do with the somewhat confusing record. In some books, WIVK was simulcast during the entire week except on the weekend, so looking at Mon-Fri numbers, they would be #1, but looking at Mon-Sun numbers, they might not be.

Going strictly by the Arbitron books, and whether it listed WIVK-AM/FM as full-week simulcasts, here is who was #1 each book since Arbitron started rating the market:

April/May 1970: WIVK-AM/FM 20.3 share
April/May 1971: WNOX 18.8
April/May 1972: WNOX 14.6
April/May 1973: WNOX 13.1
April/May 1974: WIVK-AM 14.8
April/May 1975: WIVK-FM 14.2
April/May 1976: WIVK-FM 15.8
April/May 1977: WRJZ 18.1
April/May 1978: WRJZ 16.1
April/May 1979: WEZK-FM 18.4
Oct/Nov 1979: WIVK-FM 20.9

WIVK-FM has been #1 in the market ever since, with or without the AM simulcast.

It must be for the stuff in 'A' rotation. All the copies of 'Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go' in McKay's bargain bin are scratched up. Or so I've been told. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

If they go office furniture shopping this weekend at Great Smokies Flea Market then you can take this to the bank. They've already got an option on WDVX's old trailer park studio.

Add to that absolutely not word one in the Knoxville business or general press, Radio-Info.com's news section, or Taylor on Radio-Info about an impending change...and if they thought there was anything to it, they would be all over it.

Well, there is this news item on All Access, tacked on to a Nashville story (someone must not realize there's about 180 miles between the two cities)...

http://www.allaccess.com/net-news/archive/story/76402/titans-withdraw-motion-in-citadel-case

The All Access article, and a similar one in Talkers, is all I found in my Google searching. I couldn't find the actual article that the other gentlemen quoted or wrote. So still, all we actually know is that an announcement of some kind is set for Monday at 9am. WNOX did run a promo saying "Your News station has news of its own..tune in Monday"

Walker's announcement is correct. They are telling agencies and advertisers about it. Oldies is going away, The big Talker will be the medium size talker and JP has until early August to decide what he wants to do with his old stick with what are now his call letters, WNOX.

There will have to be some staff cuts on the 2 talk stations when this plays out...

Isn't JP supposed to get the WOKI calls back?

Nope. But don't tell anyone. It's supposed to be a surprise.

I would be more than shocked if they don't move the calls back. Citadel has spent alot of time branding NewsTalk WNOX. And Pirkle has more than a small connection to WOKI.
