Unusual and Special Local TV Programming for Thanksgiving Day and the Next Day

I can remember that CBS used to carry parts of different parades including Macy's. I think I can remember Philadelphia, Detroit, and Toronto (at Canadian Thanksgiving?), and also Hawaii (Possibly taped earlier?) and Nashville (When Opryland theme park existed) at times. Hasn't it only been in recent years that CBS went to carrying only Macy's? I know that they don't use Macy's name in their broadcast, because I guess NBC has exclusive rights to that. Although I did see times when the Macy's name was on floats or balloons.

Between the two, I'd rather watch CBS's coverage. Although they have breaks with singers performing from a studio it's usually pop, rock, or country, rather than all the Broadway stuff that NBC always pushes and are the cause of the breaks further down the line in the first place.

I taped Queen Latifah just in case and they didn't cut it off. At least they did air more of the parade after 3.
Or I could be wrong. I saw somewhere that people were upset, and not necessarily because they taped the two hours in which the parade was supposed to air.

I saw "Charlotte's Web" over the weekend. Not the animated version, which as I recall was a Thanksgiving tradition on CBS, except in Charlotte (irony) because of their parade.

I guess this answers my question on the other thread. Yes, the Hawaii parade was taped months earlier but hula dancers to me became a Thanksgiving tradition.

Here is a link to an old discussion from the Classic TV board that includes more information about CBS' broadcasts of parades on Thanksgiving Day.

I also have a link to an article from the World Wide Web site TV Party that focuses on CBS' broadcasts of parades on Thanksgiving Day.

Thanks for the links. I had tried to find something that may have had the history of the parade coverage from NBC and CBS. I thought I remembered there being something on these boards, but doing a search on threads from before the "upgrade" has usually run between difficult and impossible.

According to the last post in the earlier Radio-Info thread it was apparently 2003 when CBS switched to doing only the Macy's parade.

I seem to recall all the Belo stations carrying the Houston parade from KHOU a few years ago; I'm sure WCNC Charlotte had it, and I remember it being on WFAA.

WRAL Raleigh carries the Raleigh Christmas parade on the Saturday before Thanksgiving (and thanks to the person who mentioned the Carousel parade in Charlotte; I was wondering if WBTV still has that). When I was a kid, the Raleigh parade was held on the Monday night after Thanksgiving, included some of the floats and balloons that had been used in the Macy parade, and was not televised. (I also remember that it was always cold on that night but that there was a place along the parade route to get hot chocolate.)

I don't know why CBS stopped broadcasting the Philadelphia, Detroit, Toronto, or even Honolulu parades; that made their show distinctive from NBC's coverage of the Macy parade only.

And about the choice of musical acts on CBS vs. NBC; this is just my perception of the two networks to which I don't expect much agreement: NBC has always seemed very New York-y (even down to the way they publicize their headquarters at "30 Rock"), even back in radio days; CBS has always seemed (to me, at least) to be more in tune with what used to be called Middle America. And although ABC doesn't carry the Macy parade, I see it moving more and more in CBS's direction; witness the Country Music Association Awards, which used to be on CBS, or last night's Christmas special featuring country-music artists (which used to be identified with CBS). Also, ABC has had the Charlie Brown specials for several years, and as we know, they were acquired from CBS. Finally, there's a show on ABC called "Nashville," which 20 or 30 years ago would definitely have been on CBS.

I definitely agree. NBC always had a lot of shows set there, and with other shows like SNL and Late Night, and The Tonight Show moving back there when Jimmy Fallon takes over they're more NYC-centric than ever. That's why they're called the New Yawk Broadcasting Company at times.
