UPN & the WB to merge...who'll carry it?

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1001883859

Also on the National TV board.

"The WB Network and UPN will merge in the hope of making the two smaller broadcast networks into a bigger power, according to sources familiar with the situation.

Time Warner CEO Richard Parsons, CBS Corp. CEO Leslie Moonves and Tribune Co. CEO Dennis FitzSimons were set to announce the move at a news conference in New York at 11 a.m. ET. TW and Tribune have been partners in the WB, while CBS owns UPN."

So who will carry it in the various markets? CBS/Viacom owns (or has some kind of
LMA) WSBK 38 (UPN) and I believe Tribune Co. owns WLVI 56 (The WB). That's Boston, at least. Who will have the new net?
______________

WLVI will run CW in Boston. Tribune signed a 10-year deal to carry it
on all of its stations.

WSBK may need some programming to fill its prime-time, but WBZ/WSBK
own plenty off-network strips between them so it shouldn't be a problem.

Yup--just heard from Fybush who read that press release and he also
said 56 will carry the new net while 38 will prob go back to
being an indie..as you say, they can fill it with strip programming
(sitcoms, game shows, talk shows) etc.
______________

BRING BACK TV-38!

This might be the return of TV-38! I would bring Dana Hersey back to doing voice-overs as well. Boston IS ready for another independent!

Ask The Manager, Stooges, Bruins (no wait, can't have them), Sox
(oops, can't have them either...)

I notice they're marketing themselves as "The U" (as in UPN-38). What's
to become of that? (Have seen other stations do similar marketing,
like Chicago's WCIU-TV 26 , "The U" (home of funny horror-movie host
Svengoolie. BERWYN!)

What will CBS Corp. do with the UPN stations they own that won't get the new network such as WSBK 38 Boston?

Well in the Hartford/New Haven market WB 20 WTXX will be the new home of the network as they are owned by Tribune. Not sure what will happen to WCTX 59 who just started calling themselves UPN 9 not to long ago.

They brought Stooges back not too long ago. They run them on
Sunday mornings.

They briefly resurected a weekend Movie Loft with rotating hosts(mostly local
radio personalities) until a couple years ago when UPN added its
own movie of the week show.

Outside of the Patriots' 5th qtr and couple of big game shows(Wheel, Jeopardy),
do they really have an identity in this market? The new
Judge Lopez show will have some people tuning in out of curiosity, the
station is a shadow of itself from the old days.

This should nt be a problem in Providence. WLWC has always carried both networks. The program director's life would more than likely be easier and opens the door for another 10'o clock newcast too.Possibly WJAR getting back into the 10' oclock news game or maybe WLNE.

This presents an interesting scenario in Providence where UPN 28 is actually run by UPN 38 in Boston! Providence does not even have a WB affiliate, so it already airs programming from both UPN and WB. So it's either things basically stay the way they already are here (or) Providence will suddenly be left out in the Cold. I assume that things will stay as they are and UPN 28 Providence will just become the CW.

In Boston, this question is answered, CW will be on WLVI TV 56, not on 38.
The question in my mind is this: Will CBS divest their non affilated stations now (like TV 38)? And, will WB do the same? Or, will we see them programmed just like KCAL 9 in LA?

We can't speculate, but we sure can wonder!

UPN9 / WCTX & WWOR

This is interesting because not too long ago wasn't Tribune's WTIC/WTXX duopoly contested by several opposing parties? Last I heard, the FCC was looking into the situation. What happens if WTIC is forced to hand off WTXX?

On the other hand, I thought it was ironic today on NewsChannel 8 at noon, that they reported this merger without any details of what was happening to their sister station WCTX 'UPN 9'.

Honestly, I'm glad that they will no longer be UPN9. Broadcast channel 9 has been available over-the-air in southwest Connecticut for as long as I can remember. Not to mention, it also has been on cable systems in most of Connecticut since the 80s if not earlier.

When the UPN network was created in the 90s, we had UPN9 (WWOR) and UPN20 (WTXX). After the affiliation swap, we ended up with UPN9 (WWOR) and WCTX. Then only this summer did WCTX become UPN 9. Talk about sneaky! I give LIN TV a lot of credit for bringing in their own "UPN 9" (on WCTX channel 59!) in an area that has already had its own channel 9 for decades, and UPN9 since the mid 90s.

Since WWOR is the only real channel 9, always was, and probably always will be (with the exception of DTV), I hope WCTX goes back to using either the "WCTX" name or something with channel "59" in it. Now that this change is possible, I hope that we don't end up having two independent channels calling themselves channel 9.

Anyone know what will happen in portland where the UPN and WB affil is owned by the same company?

Status quo in Providence. WLWC has already been confirmed as an affiliate of The CW.
______________

Re: BRING BACK TV-38!

I made up this mock schedule for WSBK to start in the Fall of 2006 if the station would turn from UPN-38 back to TV-38 where it used to be from 1964-95.

weekday- (M-F)
5am- Daily Buzz

Re: BRING BACK TV-38!

> 5am- Daily Buzz
Daily Buzz airs live from 6a-9a, it's not possible for a 5am start time. Viacom (and now CBS Corp) was so big on the show, I'm sure that they will push it to new The CW stations that don't air morning shows.

> 9am- The Meg LaVigne show (could they lure this former A.M
> Boston host from Virginia to TV-38)
LaVigne is GM at WUPA in Atlanta, which will become a The CW affiliate. I don't think she has much interest in doing a daytime show in Boston.

> 5pm- TV-38 News
WBZ airs a 5pm news now, making this near impossible.

> 8pm- The Movie Loft or Bruins Hockey or Red Sox Baseball

Perhaps. New agreements would need to be made for the 2006-07 season for this to happen.

> Saturday
> 12am- Veronica Mars
This is a network show. UPN allowed stations to repurpose it on weekends. Hopefully The CW will pick it up in the fall.

Re: BRING BACK TV-38!

Not bad, not bad, however, you forgot the new Judge Maria(Lopez) show. :)
U38's press release says they will be tapping CBS/King World/Warner/Paramount programming well to develop the new 8-10 prime-time schedule. So, it's not looking good for Movie Loft or Bruins or Red Sox or Ask The Manager,
but certainly more off-network strips, judge shows, reality shows,
talk shows, etc.

I wonder what will happen in Portland/Poland Spring, ME? WB is on WPXT-TV channel 51 of Portland. UPN is on WPME-TV channel 35 of Lewiston. The same company owns both stations, the last time I checked. Could this be an opportunity for FOX to come in and take over channel 35? (Assuming channel 51 becomes the area's CW affiliate.) I myself have lived in southern Maine twice, both times before channel 23 of Waterville (today's FOX affiliate, WPFO-TV) ever took to the air. In other words, who has the better analog signal in Portland itself? Channel 23 or 35?

"Veronica Mars" has been picked up by The CW for the 2006-07 season. However it won't go to syndication until 2008(depending on whether it will make it to the fourth season).
