UPN/WB MERGER: How does this affect WPWR?

If you haven't heard, UPN and The WB will combine to form one network in the fall, called The CW. Both networks have been struggling, so CBS Corp (parent company of UPN) and Warner Bros. (parent company of The WB) will combine operations and split costs and profits. All CW programming will air on Tribune-owned stations, which has a minority stake in The WB.

So how does this affect WPWR? Looks like they would have to go back to be independent! Your thoughts?

WPWR is owned by Fox. They've turned that station into a wasteland, IMO. Maybe Fox will sell it.

It'll remain what it is today. A dumping ground for products WFLD paid for but doesn't want to air.

Since it's realtively cheap to run a second station in the same market, WPWR will fill up with second rate reruns, and infomercials.

Would be nice to see them run something like the Simpsons from 5pm - 7pm.

Spanish is pretty well out. Chicago is over represented with only about 11% of the metro area speaking Spanish. And 3 Full Power Spanish Stations now.

But the real question is how much does UPN air? Two hours 7 days a week. That should be pretty easy to fill. How about "The BEST of American Idol"

LOL

2 hours 5 days a week. They don't do weekends.

Actually, "American Idol" is coming to syndication this September(2006) under the "Idol Rewind" title. Wouldn't be surprised if this one lands on WPWR-50's Fall 2006-07 schedule.

Maybe they can run more Fear Factor reruns. Ugh. What crap!

Re: UPN Brand Name is gone

NewsCorp (parent company of Fox) is removing all UPN branding from all of its stations. They will pull all promos from the air as well.

May I refer you to the National board which has a link to Broadcasting&Cable's website regarding Fox's actions on its current UPN stations:

WPWR should carry The CW, and make WGN-TV an indie so they can carry a majority of the Chicago Cubs games. Afterall WGN-TV serves audiences all over the world. They are considered a Superstation.

Is WPWR following suit on dropping "UPN"? As I checked their website, they're still "UPN Chicago".

Re: UPN/WB MERGER: Azteca America

The folks at Azteca America(i think channel 13)should consider buying it.

Would they have enough money to buy the station. Fred Eychener (please excuse my misspelling) got the station cheap because it was silent in the mid-80's, plus it's licensed to Gary Indiana, which hasn't changed, and it's worth a fortune now.
I wonder if the COL could be changed to Chicago since it doesn't even serve NW Indiana, but targeting Chicago, plus there's still WYIN 56, which is licensed to Gary Indiana, and targets NW Indiana.

Well FOX paid around $425 million for the station, and really another Spanish station would be too many. Spanish speaking people in the Chicago Metro area are about 11%. So that is not even a million people. Chicago has 11 commercial stations. (Not counting WJYS who's analog signal is too weak for most of Chicago)

So 11% of 11 station is 1.21. So proportionally having THREE full time, full power TV stations which are Spanish amounts to 27% of the commercial TV stations in Chicago are already Spanish. Could Chicago support yet another Spanish Station?

On-air and online, the logo is now "Power 50."

WGN's already picked it up--Tribune Entertainment's syndicating the show.
