UPN, WB Stations Rebranding...

WDCA/20 first went to just a 20 bug today during programming and later switched to DCA20. The Web site is still unchanged for the moment tonight as UPN20.

WLAJ runs the cable-only WBL; WHTV just left a studio share with WLAJ to partner with WLNS' plant. One assumes the VW would prefer the OTA station, but one never knows.

Just checked 13 here in LA. The UPN is gone from the "bug" as well.

Kansas City's UPN station (KCWE) calls itself "More TV 29" anyway, so it won't have a problem with rebranding.

I'd imagine KSMO (The WB Kansas City) will get the CW affiliation since it's LMA'd (and soon to be owned by, I believe) the CBS affilate, KCTV). It will probably just switch to "The CW Kansas City" if it can't come up with something better.

But then again Hearst-Argyle might go after The CW because of the KCWE calls, so they would be a factor.

Hmm. Good call. Ironically, the original calls for 29 were KCWB as it did start out as "WB 29." It would be full-circle for that station.

However, I'm thinking KSMO has the edge at the moment. KSMO is airing a 9 p.m. newscast produced by KCTV and would probably like to have the network programming to lead in. This could change. I think the battle for the affiliation in Kansas City could be one of the better ones.

To me, it seems KCWE is better off as the indy than KSMO would be. Either way, K.C. will end up with two indys, if you count "38 The Spot."

I'm also hoping "The CW" is just kind of a placeholder until a better name comes up. I'm just not liking the way it sounds.

I'm also interested in what might happen in Wichita.

Clear Channel has the Fox (24) and UPN (36) duopoly. 36 is licensed to Hutchinson while 33 is licensed to Wichita. I don't know if signal strength makes much of a difference, though, because both stations have good cable penetration for a market with such a huge land area (My parents get both on Cox in Garden City and I know they're carried on the smaller cable system in Holcomb, which also operates in several smaller towns in SW Kansas).

C.C. has the greater financial backing. KCVW (33) has the greater need. KSSC (36) may still be able to exist as an independent. KCWV, I am certain, would not survive as an indy unless it does a lot of informercials.

In Topeka and Joplin-Pittsburg, it doesn't really matter. Neither has UPN or WB stations. The only LPTV I know of in Joplin airs PAX/i.

Just checked....the UPN logos are gone from the website too! Though you can still access the site on upn9.com
