Ups and Downs in Rock & Roll

Nothing But Heartaches - The Supremes
That title turned out to be prophetic as it broke the chain of consecutive #1s for the Supremes, and ended their streak at five in a row. Not only did it not reach #1, it didn't even make the top 10! It stalled out at #11, and was actually considered a "failure" for them! Although if they had gone that high at any time prior to "Where Did Our Love Go?" they probably would have been out celebrating in the streets! ;D

Didn't their follow up "You Keep Me Hangin' On" make #1?

I said consecutive #1s. They had a total of 12 #1s in all, and five consecutive #1s.

There is more irony involving the Supremes. When Ruby and the Romantics first started out, the four guys in the group were known as the Supremes before Ruby joined them. They were forced to change their name by the A&R man at their record label, who came up with the name "Romantics" for them. They didn't like it because it didn't fit their image. Meanwhile, Florence Ballard picked the name "Supremes" when asked by Barry Gordy to come up with a new name for their group. Diana Ross and Mary Wilson didn't like it because they thought it was too "masculine" for them.

Fast forward another 20 years, and there was another group (this time, a new wave group) also called "the Romantics"!
