Have we all noticed that as ratings for Variety Hits stations continue to impress, the Jack Naysayers Club has gotten pretty quiet lately?

I'm not one that like Jack. I don't like the Chicago Jack as it's the only I heard. I like the clone, which was the first in the Chicago market; Nine-FM.
Edited by dave73 on 01/07/06 09:45 PM.

A lay loooooo ya! AND AYE MEN!!!!

To be the clone, they'd have to be immitating another radio station. Nine FM is closer to an AAA than Variety Hits, despite all the noble posturing. And, due to their profound signal limitations, it's outside of reasonable expectation for them to ever be competitive in the Chicago metro.

If the cost of signals weren't so high in Chicago, Newsweb would have tried to go for one, if there was one available. Doing a simulcast in the Chicago market the best way would have been to use 99.9 & 106.7, but 106.7 eventually went to Univision Radio, which knocked that out of the equation. But 106.7 would have been the best option as it has primary contour over Chicago, unlike the rimshot 99.9 & 92.7, especially in downtown Chicago. I didn't include 92.5 as it doesn't even cover Chicago, and would only be heard in Chicago if 92.3 from Hammond Indiana went off the air. I do agree that Nine-FM will never get the ratings that a city grade signal station would. That's because Chicago is rated by 11 counties in 3 states, compared to neighboring markets Milwaukee, which is rated by only 5 counties, Rockford at just 2 counties, and South Bend at just 1 county. That's why Chicago will always have the best ratings from the city grade sticks. But Newsweb, being an independent, obviously is doing well enough that the trimulcast is still around a year later, and 2 years on the air on the 99.9 signal in June.
As for it sounding more AAA; Nine FM's playlist is even more broad than AAA. I have listened to WXRT and they don't play CHR hits from artists like Natasha Beddingfield & Black Eyed Peas, or former CHR hits from Johnny Kemp, Ready for the World, Bel Biv Devoe, or the infamous Milli Vanilli. I don't know what you'd call it, but it doesn't sound like AAA. AAA stations have artists like Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Lang, Shawn Mullins, Sheryl Crow, Shawn Colvin, Son Volt, Wilco, plus past artists like Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Janis Joplin, and the list can go on and on. I don't remember hearing any country on AAA, though Shawn Colvin's music could pass as country, as I have come across a few music videos on CMT a few years ago. Same with Bonnie Raitt.
Edited by dave73 on 01/10/06 09:48 AM.

That's because in the markets that matter, no one cares. Judging from their ratings, no one knows it's around either. For you Jack apologists, you'll have to keep humping your own legs from here on out. I'd be willing to bet one or both of your testicles that L.A.'s Jack will start nosediving by the summer. Enjoy it while you're swimming in it. I'll disperse, there's really nothing to see here anymore.

Just because some radio board is quiet, it doesn't mean no one cares about Jack FMs. Many VH stations are still in the Top 5. Please give it up!

can't help it

Slamming the format that probably replaced his station AND his obsession with humping (which he seems to know WAY too much about) is all that keeps him going.

Re: can't help it

Now we're getting some substance back on this board again.
I'll leave the humping discussion "alone." In the right
situation(s), I hope none of us are thinking about ONLY
radio, though. That would sure make Jack a dull boy.

actually, in the top 20 markets (where there is an adult hits station), Seattle & St. Louis gained big -- Boston & Minneapolis/St. Paul somewhat, and the rest lost both big and small (after one year with the format). source: R&R Online

V.H.

ACTUALLY, most are doing pretty well. Only exceptions are NY & SF (Chicago seems to be on an up-tick, you can't count Denver 'cause it's a Fort Collins rimshot). LA, Phoenix, St. Louis, Seattle, Minneapolis, Baltimore, Nashville, Louisville, Vegas, Salt Lake City, Austin and a bunch of others in med/smaller markets are doing really, really well (in almost every case, noticably more competitive than their previous format).

Bitter Beer Face up the thread is just pissed cuz his station got nuked for V.H. and he can do nothing better than cry & whine and criticize. Tells you what me must have been like to work with/for.

Baltimore could be doing better, though I'm sure it's beating the Oldies format it replaced in the money demo.

Problem is that CBS has handicapped 102.7 Jack-FM by continuing a competing Hot AC on 106.5. Last year 106.5 was doing 80's weekends that were very close to the 80's-heavy Jack playlist. I don't know whether that's still going on, but it's worth noting that Jack just passed 106.5 in the 12+ ratings.

If you know who responds, he will say how Jack is failing in the largest markets, even though its doing well almost every where else, including larget markets.

That was a dumb move on CBS Radio's part, to start a Jack FM and own a Hot AC. Most Hot ACs are hurting from Jack (or Bob, or whatever other name their is).

It probably doesn't matter to much to them. Just as long their stations are getting the listeners!

Jack-NY

It's not really what they did but how they did it.

Their thinking was "we could put it on 102.7 FM but it would be perceived as 'just another format at 102.7' and not get much attention. Seeing CBS-FM as a long-term liability due to the ever-aging demo, they took a big chance and got a big bang out of nuking the beloved CBS-FM. They could have saved their rep by (and they could've done this anytime before Jan 1) and said, "mea culpa! We screwed up but we listened to you and we're bringing your oldies back on 102.7 (or 92.3)" and been heros.

I think what a lot of Oldies fans who were pissed at CBS for making such a move have failed to recognize is that if Oldies really was a major asset in NYC, some other group would have picked up on it by now (sooner than later). I guarantee you several groups researched to see if there was a big enough format hold to justify picking Oldies up and they found there really wasn't. It's not what anybody wants to hear but may be the truth. And, ABC putting their satellite Oldies on in Chicago is not worth bringing up- ABC did it as a stop-gap move until they sell all their stations (and, subsequently, let the new owners decided what to do long-term).

Well, you do bring up good points Cat, but I wasn't talking about the New York City market, I was talking about Baltimore.
