Visit to the TMO headquarters today

I had time to stop by the TMO HQ at 1103 Stewart ave today. I know the radio ops are out in Ronkonkoma, but since the Morey Org's HQ is there, as well as LI Press, I figured I'd voice my opinion. Walked into the building, took the elevator to the 3rd floor, and when I got off, there was NO ONE to greet me. The whole office was a mess. I found one worker, asked him what was going on, he said they were moving. The whole place was disheveled, the sign for the Morey Organization was missing most of it's letters. I asked him of the changes at the radio group, he said of that was in Ronkonkoma. I said I knew, but figured I'd come here since no one picks up the phone at either radio or press.
I asked him if the company was going out of business. He said, "i sure hope not"! Anyway, I walked around to another room. I was pretty much free to walk around the place, saw many rooms that looked like former studios on it with Party 105.3 and WLIR 92.7 bumper stickers on the doors. In another office I found what looked like more of an executive. I told him that I was a HUGE fan (which I am!) of Party 105.3 and WLIR 107.1 and would be devastated if the stations changed formats or went off the air. He said that nothing was going to change, more or less. But then I asked him about why all the DJ's were fired, and the "face of radio changing on Sept.15". He said many of the DJ's left on their own accord and some are still there, like Andre.
That's clearly a lie, as Eddie the former house party DJ at Party said everyone was fired, including Andre.
I don't believe for a minute that the suit I spoke to was speaking an ounce of truth. I reminded him he'd better be right, because if they take Party & WLIR away I would be devastated and very annoyed.

Yeah if anyone left on their own it was because they had been offered new jobs, which I know was the case for at least one person, but everyone else was just kicked to the curb.

Well as an insider, and one of the TMO jocks that did get FIRED, yes we did get fired, the future of the TMO cluster is BLEAK!!! The current LIR format will be eliminated and a brand new format that I never heard of will be put in place. The format is called neo breeze. It is an ipod with beetoven to buble, natalie merchant to sinatra. A basic menagerie of music copycatting WEHM. The Bone will become an ultra soft WBAB, and Party 105 will be a "hits" station (top 40 of sorts). Just wait until September 15th, you will see that this post is 100% right. Enjoy it while it lasts, if you can.

Well, there is this option

If what you say is true, it sounds like they may be going in this direction (se below).

I HAVE NO IDEA IF THIS IS TRUE....just guessing based upon the previous post...

This was in allaccess a week ago...

TRUMPER COMMUNICATIONS re-enters the radio fray after a 4-year absence
with the launch of previously-silent KRSZ/PHOENIX. Broadcasting as "STAR
97.5," the station will feature an "entirely new format" consisting of a
contemporary bend of pop, jazz, swing, blues, and standards.

Said TRUMPER CEO and KSRZ GM JEFF TRUMPER, "We are very excited about this
venture. We have been looking for an opportunity, and I believe this is the
right station, the right format and the right market."

Former longtime ENTERCOM/PORTLAND programmer BILL MINCKLER is on board as
PD, while JIM RYAN (who previously ran the sales departments at crosstown
KGME and THE EDGE) will run the station's sales department. CHUCK HILLIER
and ROB REYNOLDS of NEW STANDARDS COMMUNICATIONS have been serving as
consultants on the station.

==========

So I googled the name(s) Chuck Hillier and New Standards Communications and found this...

This was from about 18 months ago. Anyone ever listen to "Red" in St. Louis?

Here is the cut and paste...

After the obligatory fling with (you guessed it) all-Christmas music, “The Mall” this past Thursday (1/8) transitioned to a new format that’s the brainchild of former longtime WKQX “Q101”/Chicago VP/GM Chuck Hillier.

Inventing a new format, the President/CEO of New Standard Communications says, “is like giving birth to a child. I’ve been working on this specifically for about three years; focused on it for the last two years; and doing virtually nothing but for the last 12 months.”

First believer WMLL now identifies itself as “Red @ 104.1 – Music With Class.”

The Hillier-conceived format is along the lines of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Sarah Vaughan and Tony Bennett meeting Norah Jones, Brian Setzer, Rod Stewart, Bette Midler and Michael Buble. “It’s swing, Jazz, blues and lounge,” Hillier says. “It would not shock or surprise me if a major chunk [of audience] would come from AC or Hot AC. I’d also bet that Smooth Jazz and upscale Urban AC listeners would like us. More importantly, I think there are many people off-radio who are going to enjoy listening to us.”

WMLL will feature an all-female staff, including Denys Schaefer in morning drive and Kristi Frazier in middays. “They both came from Emmis/St. Louis,” Hillier remarks. “They like the music and fit the lifestyle. Norah Jones won more Grammy Awards than anyone on the planet and no one on radio was playing her – that was in 2003. You’d have to ask if it’s a PD’s job to deliver to people more of what they want. So many retailers are not only smart enough to play this music, but they also sell it in compilation track CDs. What do they know about their customers that radio hasn’t yet captured?”

So if it's like the previous poster said this MAY be the direction they go.

Again, that is just my speculation based upon what the previous poster said. I have absolutely no idea if it's true or not, I'm just guessing.

RadioRay

The Stewart Ave Offices have looked like that for a while i was there before all the studios were moved out of there to ronkonkoma and the letters were missing from the wall above that desk when you walk in. And it looked dishelved with copies of the LI Press laying all over the floor. So that is just the look that place has had for a long time so I wouldnt take that as thinking that the company would go out of business

TMO Hell

TMO sounds like it is run by a bunch of hacks. In my opinion what radio needs is to become very local and unique - especially in markets with tons of signals. The Ipod radio thing is stupid because, like "Jack", it is nothing but a trainwreck jukebox with no local anything. Why not just listen to a real Ipod instead of a noisy signal with commercials?!? It's pretty clear what works on Eastern LI just by revenue & ratings. WLNG and WEHM are doing well, when non-local signals that actually cover more of the area (some CT stations) barely show up. It's because people like local radio and its connection with them. A personality-free jukebox on a crappy signal? Brilliant.

Moving WLIR out east wasn't very smart in the first place because 'LIRs heritage was in Nassau, Queens and some of Western Suffolk - not out east. It started off sounding like an out of market signal from the get go with spots and promos dealing with areas way "up the Island", as well as just sounding canned. "The Bone" could have worked better if they would have not gone the cheesey hair metal and tired classic rock route. They should have been a straight-out active rock station like 98Rock in Baltimore, and like WRCN was when people actually listened to them (way back in 1991 or so). 'BAB is already established out east on 95.3 and 'RCN is playing tired classics too. TMO just blew it. Geez, why is it so clear for many of us, but the powers that be seem to have downs syndrom when it comes to programming...

Well it shows how unorganized and without direction TMO is at least. I don't think most radio stations look like a mess the minute you walk in.
And I'm sure the building's landlord wasn't all that pleased at which the condition TMO left their space either.
Looks more the offices to a pirate radio station than a real one. I haven't visited many stations, I've been to WKJY and WHLI (back when they were in Hempstead), WNYG 1440 (back when they were oldies), and WBEA when they were in Amagansett and on 104.7, and all those offices looked much better than the TMO offices.
I guess it's true what they say, you can tell alot by the way a person is by looking at how neat their space is. Probably applies to companies too.
