They're about to experience a price increase due to rising music royalties. So get ready to pay more. I'm a Sirius stockholder, and I thank you for your business.
Add this to the list of a lot of things going up. Luckily I just re-upped two subscriptions at 60% off full price for a year.

Sorry - I posted this in the wrong thread! See the December 2023 ratings thread for the re-post.

15 minute spot breaks? Sounds like a recipe for tune-out to me.

Maybe longer spot breaks worked with Stern, because of the nature of his show. He had such a draw, personally, that many of his listeners bought subscriptions to Sirius/XM because he went there.

However, music radio is music radio. If radio in general thinks that even 15 minute spots are OK, Spotify and Pandora thank you for sending them more business.

EDIT to ADD: looking at the ratings roundup posted just above, it looks like the 15 minute spot breaks didn't negatively affect ratings, as it appears they're #2 in the key demos. Maybe they should try 20 minute spot breaks.

Nobody in radio likes spot breaks. But they also like to get paid. If you have an alternative, let us know.

Only a small number of stations do that long a break. The testing says the length of the break isn't the real issue.

Oh, I understand. I just posted in an Oregon thread here on RD about a station going off the air, and one of the reasons was a reported 50% drop in advertising revenues since the Pandemic. Ads are all radio really has got, so I get it.

But 15 minute spot breaks seems to be over the limit. Some of the spot breaks I hear from time to time on local FMs seem to be lengthy, but I realize that it's the only thing keeping the lights on and the station on the air. I don't think I've heard one that even approached 15 minutes.

There's obviously a grey area somewhere in between healthy spot break lengths and sounding like an AM station on Saturday afternoon with non-stop, hour long informercials selling supplements or investment advice.

That's what I was saying. The length isn't the issue. It's the interruption. So what a small number of stations have chosen to do is one long break an hour. It's not typical. Most do two or three shorter breaks. But we find people will even complain about funding announcements or pledge breaks in non-commercial radio.

People want a free music service. The free streaming sites have ads, but not as many. However, they don't have local talent and you have to subscribe with username and password. The drop in ad revenue hurt the streaming sites too. Both Spotify and Pandora made large staff cuts, and as I said, there will be rate increases in the new year. The thing to know is that the music industry hates the concept of free music and free streaming. They will make it as painful as they can for anyone who does it.

For most people, music on the radio is just fine. They aren't big music fans, they don't have special needs or tastes in music, they just want something playing in the background as they work or drive. For them, there's no need or desire to sign up for a music service when they're already paying for several monthly video services. Amazon Prime gives them both, but it's not free.

Thanks for all your links, but I've read them.

And I pay monthly via Google Play for the SXM app so I too should be OK
