Voice Imaging

I was really dissapointed, as I travled back to where I lived for 2 years to hear Promos done by the "on air" staff. Why do stations pay for "Voice Guys" and not utilize them.

I understand if the promo is for something that is happening once, but when you have something that happens continuously, such as Sports or PAUL HARVEY. Why not use your voice guy?

Why not set your station apart from the others? Every little thing like that matters when the book comes out.

Also:
Production.
I heard numerous commercials where music was put in the background at about 1:50th of the voice, and then just cut the end off without a fade. If you are going to do a production piece, take the time to make it sound good, and if you want to be even better, make it sound EXCELLENT. Don't forget the advertiser is giving you your paycheck. I would be really, really peeved if I was an advertiser to hear something like that.

Overall, I was quite impressed with the radio stations in North Arkansas. The talent seemed very in tuned to what is going on. Now, as I made it south, I was somewhat dissapointed in what I heard.

If you need someone who will be dedicated to your staff, look around. Many, and I mean Many outstanding on air staff are out there without a job, that would do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING for you. Don't just settle for what you have.

FINALLY
both of my teams lost
17-14 they should have just played each other

Husker, interested in what radio stations you listened to in N. Ark. during your visit.

Noted, your comments on "voice guys". We use 3 different "guys" (one girl), and one of our own staff for 6 stations. I'll give props to one of the best in the biz, I think: Mike Carta. I can e-mail Mike something I need post haste, and he'll turn it around to me that day (sometimes within minutes), if he possibly can.

I'd say if you've got a "voice guy" who can't get something back within a reasonable time frame, then you need to look elsewhere. There are lots of 'em out there.

So, really, there's no reason not to use one consistent voice for promos/imaging/intros/outros, etc. And, it's one more thing we can do to make our station(s) identifiable to our listeners.

But, if those stations you mentioned are competitors of mine, then.....nevermind ;)

I am glad that you agree with me, I am for sure not a radio god, listen to radio in a top 75 market daily.

I listened to mostly country in the northern part. I think that one of the stations was 107.1 or around there, I was listening to the drive home. Also there were a few that I heard from Fort Smith that were pretty descent aslo.

The best voice guy in this part of the country is about a mile and a half from Ramblin's studios.

Chad Whiteaker.

I use him for everything I do.

I agree that Mike has great pipes and great turnaround, but in my experience his recordings are giant square waves. Don't know if that was because our program director was a complete moron (he was, i'm just not sure if that was somehow his fault) or if he just recorded all our stuff too hot. Either way, if you can get your processing to like him, he's pretty good.

It is possible he is using the "Hard Limiting" function of Cool Edit. It produces a wave that appears pushed to the max......just a thought.

Never had a problem with Mike's stuff. He sends it all "raw" and we process it in-house. Sounds like your guy was "processing happy".
