HAS ANYONE CHECKED OUT THIS EXCITING Fm translator in Tuscaloosa? It's playing classic rock from th 60's 70's and on up into the eighties and early 90's! It's actually WMHZ in Holt. I am loving this new station! It will give 106.9 some competition, so the Eagle better step it up a notch or find itself playing Castilian Spanish jaz or something!

I'm sure a small translator that only covers Tuscaloosa will cause shivers amongst the few remaining people at The Eagle up in Birmingham with their tiny 100,000 watt signal.

But for Tuscaloosa — good to hear they have a new choice for classic rock.

Don't laugh too loud...it can happen

"In what may be an industry first, an HD-fed translator has catapulted to No. 1 among 18-34 year-olds in Jacksonville in two months. Cox Media Group’s urban “Power 106.1” launched in early January using the translator W291CI and relaying an HD2 channel from classic hits sister “96.9 The Eagle” WJGL."

"Arbitron data shows “Power” posted a 3.4 in the demo in January before exploding to an 11.9 in February, tied for first place with heritage CHR sister “The Big Ape” WAPE (95.1). The start-up edged past Clear Channel’s perennial urban leader “The Beat” WJBT"

That just tells me that Clear Channel can't program urban for squat. Cox knows how to do it right, judging by the performance of some of their other stations in other markets. Maybe they just found a format niche that might justify swapping formats with another full power station.

May as well opine on this:

That small "Translator" station might do very well and overtake The Eagle.

Don't count out a small radio station, with a limited amount of power.

It may soon be a top performer, for the area they cover.

Something to think about.

That's pretty amazing. Cox is a true pro when it comes to urban. Look at what they did in Birmingham when they launched Jamz on a somewhat inferior signal back then against WENN. I never thought I'd see heritage WENN fall so quickly back then but it did. Now a translator beats a heritage full power in Jacksonville? That's pretty awesome. I agree. I see a move to a bigger signal very soon. It just goes to show you if you put all you've got into it, it doesn't matter how inferior the signal is, you can still win. As far as the translator in Tuscaloosa, you never know. If done well it could beat The Eagle in the Tuscaloosa market. I'm sure The Eagle's focus is Birmingham tho so they are probably not concerned with it.

They also had kiss to go along to take down WENN.When Kiss and Jamz first came on the air back in 1996 It was really all we had besides wtug, which signal was and still is poor in areas outside of t-town.They were diffrent from what we were used to on WENN. People left WENN and there ratings went down because you had two new stations fighting for the same listiners at the same time.WENN would have came back if the family of A.G gaston would have not sold It.IT would been a diffrent style though, but never overlook your compatition because you may be the one going down.
