W61CE Rutland

I can actually get WFSB over the air, here at my high altitude perch in central VT. My perch has one big mountain blocking any kind of line of sight reception from Mt. Mansfield. WCDC Channel 19 off of Greylock comes in perfect here as well, best over the air TV signal here. Can get WCAX's and WVNY's repeaters, all the Albany TV stations, and of course, my favorite low power TV station in the entire USA... W61CE which is still cranking out those memorable words.... "Alarm Mode" !! Happy St. Patty's Day !

Cool! What about WTIC-TV (FOX) channel 61 of Hartford? Is that a no-go due to the extremely popular and much-debated ALARM MODE station? What about the three Springfield, MA stations, WVTA-TV (PBS) channel 41 of Windsor, WVER-TV (PBS) channel 28 of Rutland, WEKW-TV (PBS) channel 52 of Keene, NH and WNNE-TV (NBC) channel 31 of White River Junction?

Damn, I guess phone calls to them don't do any good and they just don't care.

Can get WVTB 20, WNNE 31 and WVTA 41 and 52 WEKW somewhat, blocked by the Green Mountains. No go on anything from Springfield MA. No WTIC-TV, blocked by the "World Famous W61CE"..

Heck, I can see 28, 31 & 41 over here in flatlands of Saratoga Co. NY. 61 & 63 Rutland can make it into Glens Falls, but not much farther than that.

Used to be able to watch 3 Burlington very well down here years ago on the rooftop ant. Now stuck with rabbit ears, I can get a very weak 22 and occasionaly 33 but that's it from the Champlain Valley.

The 50kw Rutland radio stations have better luck with a Marti shot from the Aviation Mall and other parts of Glens Falls than they do in parts of Rutland itself.. No surprises that some of those TV signals would carry into Glens Falls, Saratoga area.. Can you pick up the world famous, now on page 3 of this thread, having more popularity than any station in the WGMU group has ever had.. and still in "Alarm Mode"... W61CE ??

This thread is GREAT entertainment. I would guess W61CE needs a simple 'reboot' to get it going again (maybe 10minutes of labor?). No one besides us cares it is in "alarm mode" 2 months(?) running. So sad... :'(

It could be worse though...you could live in Yuma, AZ like I do...Thank god for satellite radio and TV! Quite the difference from my hometown Rutland, VT!

I'm happy we're giving you giggles from your hometown all the way to Yuma ! :)

HOLD THE PRESSES... W61CE in Rutland is still making history for the longest continually broadcast program, where's the "Guinness Book of Workd Records" for this one .. Yep, W61CE is indeed still in "Alarm Mode".. This station has hibernated like a bear since mid-November or so..

FYI - that's a misstatement. Nobody lives in Yuma. The only thing Yuma has going for it is that it's not El Centro. ;)

Also entertained by this thread, from Phoenix.

At least our no-account Spanish-language Class A Fe-TV station, KCOS-LP, broadcasts station ID on a desert landcape background. It's been nearly non-stop since August, with the same three-song jazz/rock background audio repeated over and over and over again, but it beats the heck out of ALARM MODE.

Oh yeah, and this Seinfeld-esque thread has now reached four pages. 8)

Sounds like the LP in Phoenix has a bit more polish on that long running 'show' with backgroung music no less ! In the hinterlands here, in VT, W61CE gives it to you straight, black backround, small white letters on the bottom of the screen with those immortal words of engineering wisdom.... .. "Installation: Alarm Mode"..

Hey dhett,

You do have a great point...we are NOT El Centro ;) Some days i wonder though.... Thank you for the KCOS wikipedia link! I hope Time Warner adds KCOS to the already 'super stellar' local station line up we have here in Yuma. It will give me one more reason to add to my list when answering the question, "Why do you have Direct TV?" :p For the record I have Sirius sat radio too.

I will say one nice thing... NBC and FOX both broadcast OTH HD here in Yuma. This is a nice plus, but still does not compare to the dish.

Hey NO ***, How are things up Rut-Vegas way? We sill in red alert mode? :)

pj

Tell me about El Centro, does not sound like a good place ? I didn't think there were any tough places in California, especially southern Cal !

And yes, in this chilly Vermont morning.. W61CE is still indeed in "Alarm Mode". Thought it would have been a great April Fool's Prank if an engineer spent 15 minutes and fixed the thing. I wonder if any of my fellow Vermontster's have taken notice of this monumental broadcast event, or am I writing for the masses of W61CE viewers ?? Wonder is any advertiser(s) have noticed ? Wonder if the W61CE sales rep(s) have noticed ? Wonder if Equity Broadcasting has taken notice ? Maybe it's a figment of my imagination and there really isn;t a W61CE after all.. NAH, W61CE is in still in Alarm Mode, almost 5 months and counting..

If W61CE had sales reps, they would be working on behalf of WGMU, the station that ch.61's supposed to be simulcasting.

So the main question is -- how really important is ch.61 to WGMU? Or in this case, to Equity?

I realize that any W61CE reps would be rep the 'mother ship'. I'm probably the only idiot that has noticed the over the air signal tanking since last November. WCAX and WVNY keep their repeaters humming along.
With the signal being carried over Comcast, W61CE probably has little, or none at this point, over the air viewership in it's very limited coverage area. I get it because I have line-of-sight to Grandpa's Knob where it originates from. I'm sure it's very spotty at best in and around Rutland County.

Alarm mode musings:

Can you imagine what kind of a party it will be when the station finally does get fixed?

I can't either...

But it's probably going to be a bit of a letdown when it's over.

OK, that was overdramatic too, but NO DAG, whatever will you write about then?

After, what? 162 days now? would this now qualify as "Breaking News" on CNN or worthy of a FoxNews "News Alert"? Complete with the dramatic music?

Do you think the reason the Equity engineers haven't fixed this yet because they came to Vermont looking for "Rutgers" and were redirected to New Jersey? Darned if they can't find the station there!

Could it be that they came to Vermont asking where "Rutgers" was located, and none of the locals have gotten around to answering the question yet? And being from Little Rock, the Equity engineers don't think anything strange of that?

Maybe they're baffled by rural New England directions: "You go down to where the ol' red barn used to be, then you make a left..."?

Tell the truth, NO DAG: are the words "Installation: Alarm Mode" now burned into your TV?

Enquiring minds wanna know! ;D ;D

That is funny ! I bet I could put together a promotion with a ton more zip that a local radio recently did when it dropped a corporate monniker to revert back to it's former on air slogan !! Could have a lot of fun with it.. Since I am the only true over the air viewer to W61CE, I put together one helk of a bash !! Perhaps I can get Vermont ETV which owns the tower that W61CE is mounted on and see if they would allow me to rent some "Hollywood Lights" and have everyone in Rutland County (who actually cares) know that a huge broadcasting event has taken place. ;D

I just noticed this - W61CE applied to the FCC for Class A status on 11/13/2006 - about the same time the alarm mode started. As part of being designated a Class A station, they must originate at least 3 hours of programming per week. Sounds like they've been meeting that requirement. :D

Seriously though, another condition for being Class A is that they must be in-core, i.e., broadcast from a channel between 2 and 51. The station has a CP to move to ch 35 - I wonder if they're there already?

That's scary on the Class A application.. I guess Alarm Mode would fit as, local origination, and it's been slightly more than three hours long. Channel 35 is showing what I learned in college as "undefined rastar" or just plain snow. And yes, the mother ship on channel 61 is in "Alarm Mode"....
