As of the 2000 federal census, Providence regained the rank of 2nd largest city in New England dropping Worcester to #3. Worcester & Providence have traded places since early in the 20th century. By the way, both cities recorded gains in their populations from 1990 - 2000. The same cannot be said about the largest cities in Connecticut. As far as Metro areas, Worcester falls back to 7th or 8th place due to the absence of large suburban cities which surround many of the cities in Connecticut.
