I've always felt like we in Boston were at an advantage because we did have so many quality markets surrounding us. I think it raised everyone's game. Providence, Manchester, Portsmouth, Worcester, Springfield, New Bedford, Fall River...All those markets had to sound as good as Boston to get anyone to consider them worth listening to. I think it even filtered down to some of the college stations. I know we were attempting to sound good at WDJM way back when. We didn't. But, we knew we should've.
That certainly does make it more challenging for 'BCN, AAF, ZLX, 'ROR, BOS, and FNX to compete when you've got well-targeted, focused stations in peripheral markets.
6 rock-based signals of various targets. Then add the surrounding markets' stations, and you've got more than most major cities to choose from if you're a Rock listener.
