yeah......what poledo said !!! That station is just fine without someone wanting to make it into a "new radio station".....was up there last Thursday night to do some work related to the new EAS system and everything, including Jimmy Whitaker is just fine, thank you. I wish there were more WAAZs on the air !

Okay, has everyone been hanging out at Rob's house, and drinking Koolaid ;D. I just said it was louder, a woman announced WAAZ FM on the liners, and the music mix was tight. The music was the same, no stereo, yes RDS, something was....different.
I agree "Don't change WAAZ". (would make a great bumper sticker).
You all are a bunch of old skool, he'll raisin radicals down on them swamplands. I say run Jimmy out and let Crumuls put something cool on that station like another Urban or CHR.
Footnote: Watch Jimmy kick every one of their corporate asses out of the Panhandle.
Then you'd get some good raydier stations back down there!!!!

Why does Jimmy put the station off at midnight? The only thing is it leaves it good for dxing. The audio does sound better but still mono. You'd think he'd invest in a new board and equipment.
I heard rumors of a new building scheduled for completion by 2012 - it's now 2012. Is there any truths to this?
IT be great to see AAZ grow to a full time station. If it does get sold, Crapulus can invest in it. I heard he's been offered millions for that stick but turned it down.
This is probably the only true locally owned station we have.

Update: 4:07 PM recorded time checks with new voice, new liners (female voice), and very tight on air presentation. They have a new automation system

Jimmy remodeled the WAAZ building (new brick exterior and metal roof) about 2 years ago....doesn't need anything else done to the building. Guess you missed it Rob....and how would you know whether it happened or not? Was he supposed to send you certified personal notificaton that he had remodeled the building? Have you ever driven by the studio/transmitter ? Do you EVEN know where it is located? .....but I disgress....
He is supposed to (and maybe has since I was there last week) installed a newer board....I hate to see that old tube type console that probably weighed 100 lbs go.....it worked flawlessly.
He signs it off at midnight because he doesn't have a remote control and he wouldn't be legal without one....he believes in warm bodies sitting behind a board when the radio station is on the air....an amazing and very radical concept. He programs locally....another amazing concept. He told me that there is no revenue (that's $$$$ Rob) for his station from midnight until 5am. He ain't gonna stay for the friggin DXers......
You can eat off the floor in any room in that building including the transmitter room....floors are waxed on a regular basis....Jimmy wouldn't have it any other way. He isn't going to stay on 24/7 unless he is legal....unlike MANY small and LARGE operators in the area......wait, I have said all this crap before.....

They are doing well in the ratings - it be nice if they went stereo though. The old stuff went crazy with the left-right effects (late 60s?) and were not able to hear it. Especially the elevator music they play on Sundays. It's almost freaky!

Dang CCENG --- I literally spit my false teeth out laughing so hard at your post. And I don't even have any false teeth. Yet.
JW is just the coolest. I have to get back down to Crestview and get him some cool WSM-AM memorabilia. I have to agree about those floors. You are so right. And the smell of dust burning on those old tubes (I guess that's what it was) that makes that place smell like a vintage radio station (or classic car.)
Kinda hate that he's modernizing, but I guess it's probably just more time efficient for him. Gotta wonder, CW, what does JW think of making these upgrades. I can only imagine his candid use of expressions to explain. What's he doing with that old board? I have some pix of a new computer and old Harris board that have been combined to create quite the masterpiece. Will send em to the cell.

I actually like that he signs off at midnight. When WZZK pops in after WAAZ's shutdown, it's a voice from home for me.
The stereo thing is odd, though. Was the old tube board mono only? I can understand a rimshot class A shutting off stereo (believe me, no casual listeners notice, even with music these days) but a big signal like that? That's a mystery.
