WABB Goes with a BANG!

Starting today (Wednesday 29 Feb) WABB will be going back in time music and jingles (get your recorders out) at high noon till Midnight bet your ass I'll be a listening!

Starting with 2012 and ending in 1973 so a HEADS UP to all in the area. This will make me cry because we lost our hometown station of WRCK 107.3 Utica, NY to Air 1 as well. GOD this hurts. It's radio but it's like an old friend.

-Rob (gonna repost in the FL forms)

Rob check the AL board for the articles or Mr. Dittman. It is truly sad. The culture of the Panhandle is disappearing way to quickly. This is another blow.

No need for the rude speed enhancer just to say you will be listening.

Hum, I haven't listened to a single song on WABB in 15 years. Maybe I should turn on my radio?

It has been an interesting mix. Very heavy on classic top 40 from the 90's, mostly, with a distinct urban lean. They are mixing promos from old morning show stunts and things like that with really old classic jingles and some interviews that sound like they were recorded in the lowest possible bitrate mp3 can provide.

No commercials at all that I can tell. But I had to change the station when GNR came on. "Turn it off… TURN IT OFF!" ;D

So I turned on WABB around 4 and they were playing GNR so I went out and did some work for 30 min. and came back inside only to hear my radio playing another GNR song. Huh?

104.1 should sign on at midnight playing the Bob Dylan song and then repeat today's WABB playlist backward ending with 2012.

Just another harebrained idea.

So what happens when K-Love take over??

Do they occupy the WABB building & take over all the equipment as well??

Or is there a switch at the transmitter?

I dunno WTF the plan is but they're doing that with just about every artist. I dumped out when Bon Jovi came on for the second time in 15 minutes.

There's also a ton of technical problems cropping up. Distorted audio, the processing sounds like it's going wonky, audio levels all akimbo… but the studio segments sound fine. Maybe the EMF people are at the TX site twiddling the knobs already.

Interesting that WABB is heavily promoting their last day, when their ratings won't matter, but K-LOVE doesn't even mention their new station in Mobile on their website. Since it's their 1st Alabama station on a good signal in a decent market, I figured they would be plugging the heck out of this on their site.

Is it possible that WABB is on low power or a backup site/transmitter? When I turned on my radio the signal was horrible (in Pensacola) so I disconnected my rooftop yagi TV antenna (which is obviously pointed toward WALA's tower, very close if not on the same tower as WABB, and I started picking up some other station on 97.5. Too much overlap to figure out what the other 97.5 was.

I finally got out the old SuperRadio and it worked ok, but not as well as it should have.

I would've thought WABB would've been on-air live for their final broadcast.

At least broadcasting live from their farewell party at the pub!

The Audio is fine with me, Well I'm streaming it....

My guess is with the ad insert technology they use to block the commercials (when they aired them) the web stream is a program feed from the studio and not actually the FM broadcast.

Sadly one thing I have noticed is they are repeating "bits" quite a bit... I would think with the legacy they would have put together more stuff..

Something must be going on with the transmission or we are having good tropo with this fog. I had my 8 foot antenna pointed almost directly at WABB and was picking up 2 radio stations on 97.5. I'm what, 35-40 miles east of the tower? Without the rooftop antenna I only hear WABB but with more static than any other I-10 Baldwin county stations.

always sad to see a legendary station go away, especially a long standing CHR, 39 years? wow. only thing I can think of coming close in longevity is my hometown wpro-fm providence doing chr for 38 years now.

Listening online from Massachusetts tonight...I remember listening to WABB as a kid in the late 90s on family vacations to Orange Beach and Pensacola. Was one of the first radio stations that inspired me to get into the business.

What they are doing tonight is absolutely incredible.

RIP.

I'm steaming from Ballarat, Australia - while I'm at work!

Awesome music all day - such a shame that a station so close to the hearts of the local community just closes.

RIP WABB

Not sure if they will sign off at midnight because they are currently playing "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again" the Dylan song they are supposed to be playing when they sign off...it is 11:27 EST

it's Otis Redding on the online stream now, how close is the online stream to the actual broadcast? right now, seems the online song indicator is wrong though, mentioning the Dylan tune.
