WAIT-820

It will be interesting to hear what format will change to on Nov. 25th. We will just wait and see.

The word seems to be that WCPT will move down to 820 and the 5kw signal. I would assume WAIT would go up to 850, but with what? Sporting News Radio again?

I wonder what will it take to make this station hours again. Since the XMTR is so centrally located, perhaps they can get permission to operate it at night with 1 KW
or something like that

They operated with 1kw night about twenty years ago, and you still couldn't hear them clearly over most of the area....even if you were in the path of the DA. WBAP stepped all over them. I recall WBAP stepping on them even when I was physically in sight of their tower, which was then near Elmhurst.

I remember them being perfectly mixed with WBAP 50/50 on the northside of Chicago.
Neither one was usable. But even before that, WBAP's coverage had been impacted by a newcomer on 820
somewhere in the maryland/virginia area. I remember driving east in the Maryland panhandle late at night once in the mid 80's,
marvelling that while I could not yet copy the "new" 820 clearly within a hundred miles or so, it was capable of ruining reception of WBAP back in Chicago, and WBAP was still a healthy signal in Maryland. How or why anyone would want to go up against such a big signal
I still can't figure out.

I was very glad to see WAIT go back to daytime.
I remember when they used to have studios on the east side of Michigan avenue, on the second or third story and had big station
call letters up on a sign.

I believe they still have an app out there for a six tower DA at 1500 watts in Joliet not far from Silver Cross Hospital. I think that
is why they changed their COL to Willow Springs from Chicago this year so they could claim they are providing nightime service
to a town without it's own radio station. You can check that at FCC.GOV ,while we are on the subject of there nightime signal does
anyone know where in Elmhurst there towers were located?,and have they been taken down or are they still standing? Also what
part of town did there signal hit at night, I remember my Dad listened to them in his car when they were EZ100FM and 820AM and
I remember at about 5:30pm on winter nights the signal faded almost completly out here on the southwest side and WPAP came in
like a local station.

The Old WAIT, 820-AM was located on Church Road adjacent to I-290 on the east side of the road. The towers were taken down in 1990-91 my memory is a bit fuzzy. The station was dark for about a year or so until it was put on the air from WXRT's Belmont Ave tower. The towers were put up in 1981 replacing the single tower that stood in the same place for many many years when the station was a daytimer.

WBAP's skywave was always a strong signal, so the WAIT night signal didn't cover Chicago as solidly as was hoped.

Actually, the FCC dismissed that application in September, 2006, which might explain why Relevant picked up WNTD, though, from what I understand, Relevant is planning on doing brokered foreign language in the evening.

I certainly hope that NewsWeb puts Air America on WAIT. I'd like to see what numbers they may be able to put up if they had a signal that covers the Chicago MSA like 820AM does, as opposed to that useless signal at 850AM. I know that where I live in the Southwest suburbs, I can barely receive the signal, and it is usually of such poor quality, I can't listen.

The Score spent a considerable amount of time at 820AM before moving to 1160AM, and finally 670AM. If AAR were to prove itself worthy, perhaps NewsWeb, or another broadcast company, would consider placing it on an even better signal.

A few years ago, Harvey Wells mentioned the possibility of moving AAR to WNDZ, 750AM, which now has a great 15,000 watt daytime signal, but that didn't come to pass.

We'll see what happens later this month.

Looks as if WCPT will, in fact, be making the move to 820AM after all.

I receive the WCPT newsletter that they send out on occasion, and they have confirmed the move to 820AM.

Good for Fred! It's about time. Now, if AAR might be able to produce some better numbers with this far better signal, perhaps someone can convince Mr. Eychaner to open up the wallet a little further, and hire a live, local host for at least one daypart.

Isn't Randi Rhodes the only AAR host still on 'CPT during the week? Schultz and Miller are from other syndicators.

When their daytime hours are longer, they also have Thom Hartmann, who is an AAR product. WCPT also has much more AAR programming on the weekends, and also streams other AAR programs online, like Malloy, Maddow, etc., so that could be considered part of the station's programming as well.

I have to admit that sometimes I use AAR as a term to cover all progressive talk radio. Sorry.

Re: WAIT-820 1941 TO 1962

Hey Guys:

I was wondering. Lets go back into time on 820 WAIT. Would anybody know what the format was of WAIT 820 from 1941 to 1962 when it became the worlds most Beautiful Music?

Thanks
T.J.

I remember when Dan Sorkin hosted mornings briefly on WAIT in 1964 the billed it as "The World's Most Beautiful Music", except during Dan Sorkin's morning show.
