WAKR ?

Usually when I listen to 1590 WAKR [AM] at night I can hear another station coming in underneath their signal. So far, haven't been able to catch an ID but now even, when I listen during daytime, I can hear a station just underneath. More like a whisper but you can still hear it. Just wondering if anyone knows what station that might be. Just a little bit irritating mainly because I'm wondering who it might be and probably won't pay it any attention once I figure out whom it might be. I don't think it's WTVB out of Michigan.

Just heard WCGO Evanston, IL (Chicago) ID at the top of the hour, but definitely a Spanish mix in there too, maybe WNTS Beach Grove, Indiana (Indianapolis), as heard in NE Ohio.

Where from?

I looked at the frequency table for a possibility. Nothing stood out. Always difficult if it rides underneath the dominate station. We have a station nearby that is nulled to the north yet during critical hours gets clobber by a station several hundred miles to the south. It’s at 1550.

The 1550 could well be WIHG, Bristol, TN/VA which often stays up past its bedtime.

WIHG appears to be an FM frequency. Now there's WKPT in Kingsport, TN...and the fact that WKPT only puts out 37 watts at night on 1590, I doubt it's them. Once upon a time, years ago, I picked up WKPT. WAKR had a moment of dead air just before the top of the hour news break and I could hear WKPT do their station ID.
I thought it might remain a mystery but I now think it might be WFBR out of Baltimore, MD. They broadcast round the clock with 1,000 watts. Seems like every other station on 1590 drastically cuts their nighttime power. I finally remembered that a couple of years ago when WAKR was off the air for whatever reason I picked up WFBR during the nightime hours. And the fact that I am barely hearing a station underneath WAKR even during daytime hours seems like they might be they only one fitting the bill....UNLESS it's another station popping up under WAKRs signal during the daytime.
Either way, until I hear an ID it will remain an enigma for now.

Oh, as an aside, FM skip must have been pretty decent this evening as WAKR's FM signal was being totally overidden every now and then by WRQN out of Bowling Green, OH.

I got one letter wrong, I meant WIGN, because you also mentioned 1550. That would be a very possible catch. Not sure about the 1590. In East Tennessee (Knoxville/Sevierville), I often have a pipeline into Northeast Ohio in critical hours.

Is WAKR at reduced power? The other day while driving, they were coming in loud and clear. Today, no matter where I was at, it was nothing but buzzing and heavy static, and I could just barely make out a faint broadcast. Other AM's were coming in fine, so I doubt that it was something in the car splattering noise all over 1590.

I think they were off the air again, even the FM part of it was dead air And that faint broadcast, sure it wasn't another station leaking through or you could tell it was WAKR? At least on the AM side, I heard the buzzing and static but it was so annoying I didn't stick around very long.

Sounded like sports coverage, which I assumed that was what WAKR was broadcasting at the time. Could have sworn that I heard WAKR mentioned in the broadcast, but not sure. Reception seemed consistent, just very weak and noisy.

Never thought to check the FM repeater. Too busy paying attention to the road to fool around with the radio, and just hit Majic on my presets.
