Walmart urges consumers to 'cut the cord'

Walmart.com has launched a 'Cut the Cable' promotion, urging shoppers to buy products that would enable them to drop their pay TV service in favor less expensive online video service.

The promotion, which runs from June 3 to July 31, features products such as Smart TVs, routers, digital antennas and streaming media devices such as Roku, Apple TV and Blu-ray players.

"What better way to save money on your cable than by getting rid of it all together? At Walmart.com, we can help you cut the cord with devices like streaming players and antennas that will keep you entertained and save you money at the same time," the retailer says at its web site.

Walmart does not say that you would still need a subscription to an Internet Service Provider, such as your local cable or telco company, to stream online video. The company also does not disclose on the 'Cut the Cable' page that it owns Vudu, a leading streaming service that offers Pay-Per-View movies and TV shows.

I don't blame Walmart for doing this, the "cut the cord" movement is getting stronger and people are getting sick of paying for more then just the shows they watch on cable TV like infomercial channels, shopping channels and junk channels that are very low rated.

Also, on the part of what Walmart won't tell you that you need a internet provider cause it's already common knowledge that people know they need internet to watch TV though the streaming route.

Also WalMart may try to turn Vudu into another streaming service that streams live content to complete with the likes of SlingTV, PlayStation Vue and a couple other service.

Plus, this thread belongs in the Internet TV forum.

I've seen the Walmart ad. It does seem kind of bold, given that they're likely to pi*s of Comcast and some other big corporations, like AT&T(DirecTV). But given that Walmart is the arguably biggest corporation in America, I guess they don't have to worry too much about who they tick off.

I made the move from Comcast to DirecTV about 3 years ago to save money. "Cutting the Cord" seemed a long way off at that time given the inconvenience involved in cobbling together all the required "a la carte" services. But since then, HBO GO has come along, along with the Showtime equivalent, and others including CBS's online service.

What still holds me back is the unreliability of internet streaming - when I'm on Netflix or Amazon Prime, I still spend too much time watching nothing but that "spinning wheel of death." If internet streaming gets more reliable, I'm all in with cutting the cord.

What internet speed do you have? Because if your experience was the norm cord-cutting probably wouldn't be a big enough thing that Walmart is promoting it.

The last time I was at Wal-Mart 2 people for Direc TV was there selling it

Until about a month ago the Walmart down the street from us here in Denver had the Direct TV salesfolks as well. What stopped it wasn't due to Walmart wanting people to cut the cord but rather it was due to a female employee from Direct TV yelling at a Walmart customer because the customer told her that not only she didn't watch TV but that local Denver television is "..100% trash !!". OK maybe that was a bit much for the customer to say but when the Direct TV employee said "..does this mean you don't watch Nine News ( KUSA ) ?? " and customer then said "..ESPECIALLY NINE NEWS !! GARBAGE !!"..that did it !! The Direct TV employee called the customer every dirty name in the book. A friend of mine works in the store's pharmacy and from what he had told me the Direct TV employee in question her boyfriend works for..you guessed it..KUSA 9 News !!! She took the customer's words as a personal insult. Needless to say Direct TV hasn't been back since. Watching this incident unfold as I was shopping there frankly I am surprised this bit of drama hasn't made it to You Tube yet.
