WALX Now Has A HD Station

Without doing further research, I was under the impression that LPFM 100 watt licenses were all gone. The next auction, if it ever happens, would be for 10 watt LPFM licenses. When did this change?

And yes, I am looking at RDP's project from a purely business point of view. I only offer advice because I want him to have fun with this "hobby" without spending more money than he could reasonably afford to invest or loose. For that reason I strongly believe you need to make a couple of strong, trustworthy, professional radio contacts in the central Alabama area to discuss engineering and legal issues with. You will need help as you move along and I'm not convinced that the kind folks you've met via this board will be reliable enough.

How much would it cost to do an internet CCM non profit station? The reason I ask if R.D.P. had one, up and running then he would have either something ready to go should an OTA opportunity opens up. Or he has an "air/check, or I guess you would call it a cyper check" ready to go if he works or volunteers at someone else's station. He could "steam" his church services too.

poledo,

It changed with the new rules of Nov. 30. LP-10s were basically done away with, leaving only LP-100s.

Of course, with the FCC, things could change again...and very well could. I watched the FCC meet via webcast, and Peter Doyle basically said the Commission felt that LP-10s were just not viable.

I'm not savvy enough with engineering to do the application myself, which is why I am having a consulting engineer do it. I did note at least 14 frequencies where a 100 watt FM could fit in Selma.

I think Monster FM in Jasper Alabama does engineering for this kind if thing.

RDP,

You know I consider you a friend and hope to save you some hassle and bucks. Being legally blind, I am on the limited income thing now, too. Tallahassee radio went from having DJs to one live and local morning show. Satellite receivers and networks sent most Tally radio folks to the unemployed crowd.

Adult CCM could be a good choice for building an audience. It had a 21 year run as a local format until K-Love and WAY came into the market. The AM couldn't compete against them successfully. I then took it Southern Gospel for two years before the owner decided to lease the station out.

It made more money with CCM than with Southern Gospel or the lease.

secondchoice,

I started an internet station for under $300 but have invested more into it since starting it in 2001.
It costs around $120 a month to operate, including all the royalties - which account for over half the monthly costs. I started with CCM but went to country in 2003.

Good info Alan. I agree that 10 watts is virtually useless as a community station. 100 watts from the right location is useable.

RDP, you'll need to create a non-profit corporation just to file an application for a LPFM license. This would cost several hundred dollars using a real attorney (reccomended over online services like LegalZoom). Your church is already a non-profit and could therefore file an application cheaper than you could.

They have the internet in Selma? That's news.

(Sorry, couldn't resist.)

That's not internet, that's torture!

All get got here is AT&T and Charter. Neither one is dependable when it comes to actual service. Both have many issues.
