WAMO Deal Failing??

FCC seems to be having second thoughts about Sheridan's deal to sell WAMO. Did the money really fall through??

more likely they are caving to political pressure from the Congressional Black Caucus, among others. The FCC apparently rescinded an initial approval. I don't watch the filings religiously, but I'd say that action is fairly unusual. I'd say Michael Copps got a call from the White House. This would seem to go hand-in-hand with the request for a Government Bailout by minority broadcasters this week. (delay the sale so one of us can get some Federal money to buy WAMO and keep it a minority station)

If it were just any buyer that would likely be the end of it. But in this case, will the FCC's actions be interpreted by some as being anti-Catholic? And will a bailout weary public put up with this? Should be very interesting to watch it all unfold.

wow....the plot thickens! Approved, unapproved and then re-approved in the space of less than a week? Whatever is going on it seems pretty intense.

hen I read that WAMO might stay Urban, my heart went pitter=pat.

Somebody on one of these threads mentioned Radio One. I suppose it is possible that the buyers could turn around and either sell or enter an LMA with Radio One to keep 106.7 urban, and then use the money to finance religious programming on the AM's. Would make as much sense as selling to ESPN.

Inner City actually bought 1550 a few years ago and tried to use the tiny little graveyard frequency to compete with WAMO. Based on the facility and frequency it had no chance from the word go, but Inner City probably has no further interest in Pittsburgh beacuase of that failed venture.

I still think CBS should move 93.7 more Urban if WAMO departs. WAMO seems to have a much better 12+ book than WBZW.

Way more actually. If WAMO had those kind of sales numbers in any of the last five years we wouldn't be talking about the sale.

At present in this market B-94 draws enough main line advertisers. WAMO runs bail bond commericals.

I don't care so much about the FM as I do the AM. When/if it goes, there will be NO outlet for that music in town, unless 92.9 steps up to the hahahahahahahahaha I knew I couldn't type that out without laughing.

When 104.7 was Urban A/C they couldn't sell it.

WAMO is changing hands because they couldn't sell that format either.

Anyone picking up the pattern here?

Why couldn't one of the college stations play this music sometime or maybe 620 with a special show possibly weekly.

There's an old line about a tree falling in the forest lurking around here....

620 is, by and large, sold out. There's some R&B in the oldies played on 770 but not enough to appeal to the African-American audience. I dare say no one is going to step forward to fill the hole left by WAMO AM & FM, but WZUM has slid into the Gospel format niche soon to be vacated by 1510.

How about WANB moving in to Greater Pittsburgh, increasing power to 50,000 watts and filling the hole . Could be "Magic 103" Like wow!

WAMO is in a very tightly packed group of stations, billings wise.

In 1980, WSHH, WLTJ, WXDX, WKST, WAMO, WRRK, WZPT, WORD and WPGB were all plus or minus $500 k of the median figure of $4.4 million each.

Urban is a very successfulo format, but if an owner wants to cash in their chips, being "successful" is not going to stop them.
