WARM--ANYONE INTERESTED IN BRINGING WARMLAND BACK????

BTW, the annual harmonic and NRSC measurements for that station are now due.
"WARM, now broadcasting on 590 and 1180 to serve you better"

When I worked there, I never had problems with harmonics going out of FCC specs. If they do, the odd-numbered harmonics are more likely to cause trouble. (Any of you ham radio types remember the old trick of using a 40 meter dipole on 15 meters?) So the troublesome harmonic for WARM would be the third harmonic at 1770 kHz.

Yep. We used to do that in the radio club I was with many moons ago.

Back in the late nineties WAZL (1490 Hazleton) used to put out a harmonic on 590 khz which totally blocked out WARM in much of that city. Yet I can also remember Terry McNulty talking about doing remote broadcasts in Hazleton in the 1960s, so that may not always have been a problem. I don't know the status of things there these days, or when the problem arose.

What you are describing is a receiver artifact, rather than a problem with WAZL. Most AM broadcast receivers have an intermediate frequency of 455 kHz. The second harmonic of that is 910 kHz. Subtract 910 from 1490 and you get 580...close enough to WARM's frequency to cause problems in areas where the WAZL signal is very strong. A harmonic of the local oscillator in the receiver can cause such a spurious response to show up, causing WAZL to be heard at 580 or 590.

A harmonic is a multiple of a frequency. For WAZL, the fundamental frequency is 1490 and the second harmonic is 2980 kHz.

Actually many digital receivers have an IF freq. of 450 Khz because this frequency is divisible by both ten and nine. The image frequency for a station on 1490 would fall on exactly 590.
Now for the good news, no station on 1490 should be a threat to anyone listening to a 590 unless you are in their parking lot.

I heard the "In the Good ol' Summertime..." jingle twice in recent days. It's November. Cumulus, take care of the station, sell it, or sign it off. You ought to be ashamed at the way you neglect WARM.

Ka2xuK- You are right on the money ! WAZL's image frequency is 580 Khz. Simply double the If frequency of 455khz and subtract that from the main or incoming frequency of 1490 khz.
The oscillator frequency is 1035 khz and the secondary harmonic is
2980 khz. When I lived in Hazleton in the early 1970s ,we were able to hear WAZL on the right side of the receiver at 1490 khz as well as the left side of the dial at about 580khz.It was there on all receivers including our old,1940 Philco.( IF @ 455kc).
Speaking of the IF frequency of 455khz- Is WGBI-910 radio in Scranton still on the air ??
I live in central Pennsylvania and we have WSBA radio on that same frequency. It's a difficult station to tune in clearly due to the secondary harmonic of 455khz.( Even on my "Grundig" )
I also recall in the early 1970s when WAZL apparently boosted their FM power and installed a new antenna.Prior to this,I was able to watch channel 10,WCAU in Philadelphia with an outside antenna. As soon as WAZL FM increased power ,their secondary harmonic at 195.80 megahertz literally wiped out the signal of WCAU.In the analog days of television their picture was at 193.25 mhz and their sound carrier was 4.5 mhz above the video.I tried all types of traps and filters however nothing really got rid of that herringbone pattern.I missed that station and CBS because WDAU TV in Scranton dropped a weak signal in my area at that time.

Not the way you would think of it. 910 is now occupied by WBZU, and it comes off the WEJL tower on the Times building in the center of Scranton.
It simulcasts WILK's programming, and the power out is 900 watts by day/440 watts at night.

http://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=WBZU&service=AM&status=L&hours=D

They got rid of the tower on the hill by Davis Street.
The signal doesn't generate the heterodyne whistle that the old WGBI transmitter always seemed to, fortunately.

Speaking of that: Now the Citizen's Bank by Public Square in Wilkes-Barre is going to be closing in February!

Many will recall the WARM broadcasts from that bank lobby of high school choral groups
singing Christmas carols and songs during the holiday season, back when it was "the Miner's Bank" and then later the "United Penn Bank". The songs were sung at noon, during peoples' lunch hour, and were popular both "in person" at the bank and on the radio.

:(

I called the fokes at Cumulus and they told me that they will keep WARM 590 for a very long time.

WARM faces two clear paths in the future; Fix or Sell. At this point Cumulus has yet to take any action to repair or fix up this facility. They have the money to take action. They've had over a year so now I'm guessing they might sell. They did sell their cluster in Binghamton to Townsquare.

Well you got me there.
I have to admit that in my mind, the passage of decades seems like one big mash-up.
I would have to say (best guess) late 60's and through the 70s.
Dave Yonki might actually have a better grip on the time frame here.

From your mouth to God's ears! (Forgive the anthropomorphism here.) Maybe I could then get my job back, especially if I could get the funding to progressively fix the problems at that plant, doing a little at a time? Five thousand watts at the low end of the dial can carry over remarkable distances with daytime groundwave...but not with a rotted-out ground system!

warms had this problem for how many years? there not going to fix it, or spend any money on it..if they do, ill come back and work for a year free...i think both my self and phil are dreaming of a white christmas..

In May it will be a year since I last participated in this thread. As I recall guys were lining up to work for free - (or for prime daypart hosts - slices of pizza). My question is how is the whole projrect working out? It has been almost a year after all.

I'd work for free. No experience, but at least I wouldn't steal "Everywhere You Go"
from Doris Day and make it into a cheesy theme song. Just sayin'.

Actually I've always thought Herb Oscar Anderson's "Hello Again!" was terrific.
Maybe he'd do a celebrity guest appearance when the new WARM hits the air!
